METI Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ogushi Visits the United States

From September 5 (Tue.) to 10 (Sun.), 2017, Mr. Masaki Ogushi, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited the States of California and Washington, the United States. In California, he held meetings with associations and leading companies related to the fields involving the Fourth Industrial Revolution and with stakeholders of the state government, and exchanged views with them. In Washington, he exchanged views with executive management of the Boeing Company and toured a plant of the company.

1. Meeting with associations, leading companies and other entities related to the fields involving the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Prompted by the meeting in July 2017 between METI Minister Seko and Mr. Klaus Schwab, Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ogushi held a meeting, during this visit, with Mr. Murat Sonmez, head of the WEF Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ogushi delivered to Mr. Sonmez a message from Minister Seko that Japan hopes to deepen the cooperative relationship with the WEF, and explained the Connected Industry policy concept that METI is promoting. Following this, both sides confirmed the establishment of further cooperative relationships, including information exchange between METI and the center in the fields of advanced technology, including mobility, e.g., drones and autonomous driving.

Moreover, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ogushi visited leading IT companies in the fields of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Silicon Valley, including NVIDIA Corporation, Google Inc., and venture capital businesses, and exchanged views with stakeholders concerning challenges in creating innovations in Japan in order to achieve the Connected Industry policy concept.


2. Meetings with stakeholders of the government of California

Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ogushi held separate meetings with senior officials from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority, California (CCTA), both of which are advancing leading efforts in the field of autonomous driving. At each meeting, both sides exchanged views concerning future directions of related regulations in the United States, progress made in public-private demonstration projects in Japan and the United States, and other issues, and confirmed that METI  will establish  cooperative relationships, including information exchange, with both Caltrans and CCTA. Following this, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ogushi toured a large-scale test site for autonomous driving in Contra Costa County.


3. Meeting with vice president of the Boeing Company and touring a plant of the company

In April 2017, Minister Seko held discussions with Mr. Raymond L. Conner, Vice Chairman, Boeing Company, concerning Japan-US cooperation in the field of aircraft. In light of this, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ogushi held a meeting with Mr. Mark D. Jenks, Vice President, Boeing Company, and both sides confirmed that METI will deepen cooperation with the company to enhance competitiveness in the fields of existing and future aircraft.
