Parliamentary Vice-Minister Hiraki Attends the APEC SME Ministerial Meeting

From September 14 (Thur.) to 16 (Sat.), 2017, Mr. Daisaku Hiraki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited Ho Chi Minh in the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam to attend the 2017 APEC Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Ministerial Meeting. At the ministerial meeting, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Hiraki called participants’ attention to the importance of promoting digitalization of SMEs to encourage more SMEs to access global value chains in the APEC region.

1. APEC SME Ministerial Meeting

At the APEC SME Ministerial Meeting on September 15, regarding the major agenda titled “Enhancing Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)’ Competitiveness and Innovation in the Digital Age”, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Hiraki introduced support measures for Japanese SMEs to promote digitalization, including cross-border e-commerce (EC).

In Addition, he stated that each APEC economy is required to enhance its cooperation with SME support organizations, local governments, etc., and to develop a platform that successfully provides extensive support to SMEs in order to attain a further expansion of SME participation of global value chains in the APEC region.

Furthermore, the ministerial meeting adopted three statements, i.e. the 2017 APEC SME Ministerial Statement, the Promoting APEC Innovative Start-Ups, and the APEC Strategy for Green, Sustainable and Innovative MSMEs.

2. Exchanging views with participating ministers

Parliamentary Vice-Minister Hiraki had a bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. Nguyen Chi Dzung, Minister for Planning and Investment, Viet Nam - the APEC host economy in 2017 - and confirmed that both sides will advance cooperation in the field of SMEs. In addition, he exchanged views with other participating ministers during breaks of the ministerial meeting.

3. Visiting Japanese companies developing business in Ho Chi Minh, Viet Nam

Parliamentary Vice-Minister Hiraki visited TOWA Industrial Vietnam Co., Ltd. (design, process and manufacture of high-precision components), and exchanged views concerning challenges that Japanese companies in the country are facing and their efforts to overcome such challenges.

In addition, he exchanged views with representatives of other Japanese companies developing business in Viet Nam, such as Okamura Tokyo Limited Company (management of buildings, assets, etc.), Sumitec Vietnam Co., Ltd. (metal processing), Takigawa Corporation Vietnam (process of wrapping materials), and Misoya Vietnam Co., Ltd. (food production).
