Winners Determined for the FY2017 Awards Program for Individual and Other Contributors to Promotion of Informatization Announcement of the winners of the METI Minister's Awards

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been holding an awards program titled “Awards Program for Individual and Other Contributors to Promotion of Informatization” to make honorable recognition of individuals, companies and other entities (companies, associations, educational institutes, etc.) that have contributed to the promotion of informatization for economy and society. As for the FY2017 program, METI selected 5 winners for the METI Minister’s Awards.

1. Outline of the awards program

METI will make honorable recognition of individuals, companies and other entities that have played leading roles or achieved outstanding efforts in the fields of: research and development of advanced information processing technologies; development of human resources with advanced IT skills; introduction of IT utilization efforts into companies left behind in IT utilization; securing of safety in information processing; and other efforts for informatization.

As part of the events for the Informatization Month* campaign every October, the award program has been held since 1972 in a continuous manner. This fiscal year will be the 46th program.

*Note:In 1972, METI, in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), the Cabinet Office (CAO), the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), decided that every October would be Informatization Month, aiming to promote informatization across Japan to achieve prosperity for the public. Since then, the government has been holding a variety of events to raise public awareness of informatization.

2. Five winners of the METI Minister’s Awards under the FY2017 program

Note:Concerning the reasons for selecting the winners, see the Appendix.

• The Award for Individuals:

  • Mr. Masataka Goto, Prime Senior Researcher, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology
  • Mr. Osamu Kon, Advisor, Japan Users Association of Information Systems
  • Mr. Seiichi Shin, Professor, University of Electro-Communications

• The Award for Companies:

  • Kumon Institute of Education Co., Ltd.
  • Mamezou Co., Ltd.

3. Commemoration ceremony for Informatization Month

October 2 (Mon.), 2017; from 14:30 to 16:00

(1) Outline of the commendation ceremony for the awards program

On this date, winners will receive public recognition for the METI Minister’s Awards, the MIC Minister’s Awards, the MEXT Minister’s Awards, and the MLIT Minister’s Awards.

For the winners of other awards presented by other ministries and agencies, visit the respective websites for the ministries and agencies or the METI’s portal website for the Informatization Month campaign(in Japanese).

(2) Outline of the commendation ceremony for the U-22 Programing Contest

Taking this opportunity, a commendation ceremony for the U-22 Programing Contest will be held to make honorable recognition of the winners. This contest targets programming-related works created by young people of the age of 22 or under.
