Agency for Natural Resources and Energy The LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2017 was Held

On October 18 (Wed.), 2017, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre (APERC) held the LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2017 in Tokyo.

At the sixth conference this year, including ministers and top executives of related enterprises, more than 1,200 people involved in the field from about 32 countries and regions around the world attended the conference. Participants shared their views on the latest trends of the LNG market and also deepened discussions concerning the future development of the LNG market.

Outline of the conference

  • At the conference, participants observed the current changes in the LNG market and the importance of appropriate future development of the market, and based on these assessments, they held discussions concerning a variety of issues, ranging from producer-consumer cooperation towards developing LNG market in Asia, new LNG opportunities driven by innovation, to LNG as transport fuel, and flexible LNG market and spot trading.
  • Mr. Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, delivered a speech stating that Japan will contribute to expanding the LNG market in Asia, focusing on two points, or “Two Contributions”: [i] preparing a 10 billion dollar-level financing initiative from the public and private sectors in Japan aiming at boosting demand for LNG in Asia, and [ii] providing opportunities for developing 500 skilled human resources over the coming five years.
  • Moreover, Minister Seko held individual, bilateral meetings with 11 ministers, and a secretary director of an international organization who were participating in the conference, and exchanged views at each meeting concerning cooperation toward the development of global LNG markets, and issues involving the energy fields in the respective countries.
  • Minister Seko and H.E. Dr. Shri Dharmendra  Pradhan, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas of India, signed a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) in the field of LNG. Moreover, Minister Seko held a meeting with Mr. Dan Brouillette, Deputy Secretary of Energy of the United States, and both sides broadly exchanged views concerning energy cooperation, and they welcomed the renewal of the Statement of Intent (SOI) Concerning the Nuclear Cooperation and the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) Concerning the Field of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), both of which had been signed prior to the conference.
