November is Product Safety Inspection Month Awareness-raising campaign starts to enhance product safety

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has designated every November as “Product Safety Inspection Month” and conducts an awareness-raising campaign every November to help the public learn about the safe use of products.

The FY2017 campaign will hold a variety of events concerning product safety nationwide, such as, in Tokyo, a Product Safety Inspection Seminar held by METI and a briefing session held by the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) concerning its operations in FY2016 focusing on product safety initiatives, as well as panel exhibitions in regional Bureaus of Economy, Trade and Industry across Japan.

In collaboration with private companies, METI will enhance efforts to communicate product information to consumers and raise public awareness through a nationwide campaign to prevent product accidents, including raising public awareness of: products subject to recall, the Long-term Use Consumer Product Safety Inspection System, and instructions on the correct use of products.

1. METI’s efforts

(1) Holding a Product Safety Inspection Seminar

Session 1:
Commendation ceremony for recognizing the winners of the 11th Best Contributors to Product Safety Awards (Award winners will be publicized at a later date.)
Session 2:
Presentations of case examples of the leading efforts for product safety by METI Minister’s Awards winners

(2) Showcase of posters and other displays for the Product-Safety campaign

(3) Information distribution targeting SMEs

Campaign flyers will be distributed at commerce and industry associations as well as chambers of commerce and industry across Japan and at events organized by the Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, JAPAN, and other sites.

(4) Online public-awareness-raising campaign for product safety

Information on product safety will be provided on the Product Safety Guide website.

2. NITE’s efforts

NITE will hold briefing sessions titled “FY2017 Briefing on Product Safety Initiatives,” in which NITE will make presentations concerning the trends of product accidents discovered from the results of NITE’s research in FY2016 on product accidents, the leading efforts for the prevention of product accidents, and other issues.

3. Collaborative efforts with private companies

  1. Posting campaign posters at cooperating retailers, etc.
  2. Raising pubic awareness of product recalls and product safety through regional publications, etc.
  3. Raising public awareness of the Product Safety Inspection Month on the websites of private companies and by other means
  4. Awareness-raising activities for product safety, taking advantage of events organized by cooperating companies
  5. Activities involving product safety by the winners of the Best Contributors to Product Safety Awards, e.g., holding seminars and producing media programs
