Release of Joint Statement on Trilateral Meeting of Trade Ministers and Japan-EU Joint Statement

On May 31 (Thur.), 2018, Mr. Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, attended the Third Trilateral Meeting of the Trade Ministers in Paris, the French Republic. At the meeting, the United States, Japan and the European Union (EU) agreed on a Joint Statement on the Trilateral Meeting of the Trade Ministers. In addition, Minister Seko held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Cecilia Malmström, Commissioner for Trade, the EU, and both sides issued a Japan-EU Joint Statement.

1. Third Trilateral Meeting of Trade Ministers

Focusing on the joint actions agreed at the second trilateral meeting in March 2018 to exclude market-distorting measures by third-party countries, the ministers held discussions on the progress in countermeasures and future directions to address this matter, and compiled the discussion results into an overall joint statement and three field-based documents, i.e., a Joint Statement on Technology Transfer Policies and Practices, a Joint Statement on Market Oriented Conditions, and a Scoping Paper on industrial subsidies.

2. Bilateral meeting with EU Commissioner for Trade Malmstrom

Minister Seko held a meeting with EU Commissioner for Trade Malmstrom. At the meeting, both sides shared concern over Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 of the U.S., and issued a joint statement as below.
