Round Table Conference on Connected Industries Held - METI Minister Seko Discusses Smart Life with Leading Executives

The Connected Industries Policy is Japan’s concept aiming to create new added value or overcome societal challenges through connecting a variety of industries. As part of the efforts to achieve this goal, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) held a round table conference between Mr. Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and representatives and experts of the related industries.
At the round table conference on smart life, representatives from companies and industrial associations in related industries made briefings on specific action plans to encourage data utilization. Following this, Minister Seko and participants involved in the field of smart life held proactive discussions in light of the action plans.

1. Background and purpose

The Connected Industries Policy is Japan’s concept aiming to create new added value or overcome societal challenges through connection among machines, data, technologies, people and organizations, including those between the existing industries and digital technologies. As one of the efforts to this end, in October 2017, Minister Seko released a “‘Connected Industries’ Tokyo Initiative 2017” as a futuristic view of Japanese industries.

As the initiative stipulates five priority fields, METI established five field-based working groups, and these working groups have been intensively discussing specific actions to achieve the goals set in the initiative. Against this backdrop, METI held the round table conference bringing together Minister Seko and leading executives in the field of smart life, one of the five priority fields. On this occasion, participants received briefings on specific efforts in this field from representatives of related industrial associations and companies and held discussions on related issues.

Participants agreed that in response to the opinions offered by the participants, the working groups will advance specific actions involving data utilization and other areas to bring about achievements through public-private cooperation and that METI will convey such cooperative achievements to a wide variety of people inside and outside Japan.
