The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) conducted a Survey on Selected Service Industries as of July 1, 2017, to uncover the current situation of the service industries and obtain basic data for policies concerning these industries.
METI hereby announces that it compiled the results of the survey into a preliminary report.
1. Targets of the survey
The 2017 survey targeted establishments or companies in 28 predetermined service industries, such as software services, to identify their annual sales and other facts in 2016.
2. Overview of the survey results (annual sales)
(1) Annual sales (achievements in 2016)
Looking at 21 service industries providing services to establishments, the sales in software services were the highest at 14.3745 trillion yen, followed by those in advertising services at 8.4697 trillion yen and those in data processing and information services at 7.6658 trillion yen.
As for credit card and installment finance services, the sales were 65.9026 trillion yen.
Looking at seven service industries providing services to individuals, the sales in ceremonial occasions were the highest at 2.0784 trillion yen, followed by those in sports facilities at 1.8062 trillion yen and those in performances and theatrical companies at 951.8 billion yen.
(2) Annual sales by employee
Looking at the service industries providing services to establishments, the annual sales by employee in general goods rental and leasing were the highest at 182.11 million yen, followed by those in office machinery rental at 178.87 million yen and those in advertising agencies at 71.53 million yen.
As for the service industries providing services to individuals, the annual sales by employee in performances and theatrical companies were the highest at 38.53 million yen, followed by those in ceremonial occasions at 17.45 million yen and those in public gardens, amusement parks and theme parks at 15.32 million yen.
