METI Releases the Revised Report on the Results of the 2016 Economic Census for Business Activity Concerning Data Across Industries

In June 2016, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) conducted the 2016 Economic Census for Business Activity as a statistical survey designed to ascertain accounting items, including sales and other income (hereinafter referred to as “sales”) and expenses for all industries, targeting all establishments and companies in Japan at the same point in time. METI hereby announces that the ministries have compiled a revised report on the survey results.
The results of this census reveal the current state of Japanese industries, taking into consideration the recovery from the damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and current data can be compared with the results of the 2012 Economic Census for Business Activity. The results of the census are expected to be utilized as basic data in a variety of fields to ascertain the current state of each industry in Japan.
1. Outline of the census
The Economic Census for Business Activity aims to ascertain comprehensive accounting items at the same point in time, such as sales and expenses in all industries, uncover the current state of economic activities across Japan and by region, targeting establishments and companies in Japan, and gain population materials for various types of censuses targeting establishments, companies and other entities. This is the second census following the first one in February 2012.
2. Outline of the report
- Sales value and added value
Total sales in all industries across Japan in 2015 was 1,624.7143 trillion yen, while added value was 289.5355 trillion yen.
Looking at the sales by industry, those in the wholesale and retail trade industry were 500.7943 trillion yen, accounting for 30.8%, the largest share in all industries, followed by those in the manufacturing industry at 396.2754 trillion yen, accounting for 24.4%, and those in the finance and insurance industry at 125.1303 trillion yen, accounting for 7.7%. Moreover, the tertiary industries account for 68.5% of the sales in all industries.
- Number of establishments and employees
As of June 1, 2016, there were 5.578975 million establishments in Japan, while the number of employees was 56.873000 million.
Looking at the number of establishments by industry, that in the wholesale and retail trade industry was 1.355060 million, accounting for 25.4%, the largest share in all industries, followed by that in the accommodations, eating and drinking services at 696,396, accounting for 13.0%, and that in the construction industry at 492,734, accounting for 9.2%. Moreover, the tertiary industries account for 81.6% of the establishments in all industries.
