From July 12 (Thur.) to 14 (Sat.), 2018, Mr. Yoji Muto, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited the French Republic. In the country, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Ministry of Economy and Finance, France, and the Secretariat for the Minister of State for the Digital Sector, attached to the Prime Minister, France, released a joint statement for advancement of cooperation in the field of innovation and the digital sector. In addition, State Minister Muto held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Mounir Mahjoubi, Minister of State for the Digital Sector, attached to the Prime Minister. Following this, he attended a “France-Japan Startup Evening,” an event for supporting startups in Japan and France, which was held with the opportunity provided by the release of the joint statement.
1. Joint statement for Japan-France cooperation in the field of innovation and the digital sector
METI, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (France), and Secretariat for the Minister of State for the Digital Sector, attached to the Prime Minister (France), agreed on cooperative commitment to: supporting startups in Japan and France, enhancing cooperation on joint research between the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), fortifying a joint investment project between the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and BPIFRANCE, convening Japan-France dialogues toward G20 and G7 meetings, and other initiatives.
2. The meeting with Minister Mahjoubi
Both sides exchanged views concerning challenges in utilization of data and AI and policies to overcome such challenges and agreed to dispatch representatives from startups to future events, such as CEATEC and VIVA Technology.
3. France- Japan Startup Evening
In June 2018, METI launched a J-Startup program. As one of the efforts for the program, on July 13 (Fri.), 2018, Japan and France jointly held an event in support of startups, titled “France-Japan Startup Evening,” at Station F, an incubator facility for startups in France. This was held as a kick-off event for the cooperation of two startup initiatives, J-Startup and La French Tech. The purpose of this cooperative effort is to support Japanese and French startups in developing business overseas. Taking this opportunity, both countries held networking and other events between French stakeholders and Japanese startups that are interested in entering French markets.
