METI announces that six individuals and two organizations were selected as winners under the 11th National Maritime Awards program, and the recognition ceremony was held on August 31, 2018.

1. Summary of the National Maritime Awards

Japan aims to strongly promote maritime policies and realize its status as a maritime nation. To achieve this goal, it is indispensable to raise public awareness about the ocean. The Basic Act on Ocean Policy specifies that the state must take necessary measures for educating the public and disseminating knowledge among the public about the ocean.

For this purpose, in 2008, the government established the National Maritime Awards to honor individuals and organizations for their outstanding achievements in awareness-raising activities, academic and research activities, industrial vitalization, and other efforts in a wide range of fields related to the ocean, including science and technology, fisheries, maritime affairs, and the environment. By celebrating their contributions and introducing them to the public, we would like to provide the people with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the ocean as well as cultivating an awareness of the ocean among them. This awards program is a part of the Basic Plan on Ocean Policy under the Basic Act on Ocean Policy.
