METI and the IoT Acceleration Labs Determine 19 Regions as Winners for the Fourth Selection under the Local IoT Acceleration Labs Project
September 7, 2018
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the IoT Acceleration Lab have been selecting initiatives that create IoT projects in local areas as “Local IoT Acceleration Labs” since June 10, 2016. METI and the IoT Acceleration Lab hereby announce that they have completed the fourth selection process for applicants and determined 19 regions as new winners.
1. Outline on the Local IoT Acceleration Labs project
With the advent of IoT, big data and AI, industries and society as a whole are seeing significant changes all over the world. In response to this situation, it is necessary for Japan, as well as other countries, to create new IoT business models, develop and discover IoT platform creators, and use them as a driving force for new growth.
In this context, METI and the IoT Acceleration Lab have been engaging in efforts towards selecting and publicizing initiatives that create IoT projects in local areas as “Local IoT Acceleration Labs”. Through this project, the Lab provides assistance by granting licenses for use of official logos, conveying information on winners to members of the IoT Acceleration Lab, (e.g., through sending email newsletters and event news), and dispatching mentors to regional projects and companies to provide encouragement and aid in ensuring success in development. METI and the IoT Acceleration Lab have sounded a call for applicants since 2016, and selected a total of 74 regions under the Local IoT Acceleration Labs project to this point (29 regions at the first selection in July 2016, 24 regions at the second selection in March 2017, and 21 regions at the third selection in August 2018).
