METI to Launch Cross-Sectoral Sub Working Group under Working Group 1 (Systems, Technologies and Standardization) of the Study Group for Industrial Cybersecurity
October 3, 2018
In May 2018, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) formulated a draft of the Cyber-Physical Security Framework based on discussion results by Working Group 1 (Systems, Technologies and Standardization) under the Study Group for Industrial Cybersecurity. Aiming to uncover security issues commonly faced by all industrial areas and discuss relevant countermeasures, based on the draft framework, METI decided to launch a Cross-Sectoral Sub Working Group under WG1, and will hold the first meeting of the sub working group on October 5 (Fri), 2018.
1. Background and purpose
On February 7, 2018, this year, METI launched Working Group 1 (Systems, Technologies and Standardization) under the Study Group for Industrial Cybersecurity. With an aim to securing cybersecurity throughout the supply chain in “Society5.0” and “Connected Industries,” the Working Group considered the framework for cyber-physical security measures, and has been advancing formulation of cybersecurity guidelines into the Cyber-Physical Security Framework. Further, METI formed a sub working group for each industry field and has been discussing cybersecurity policies taking into account the specific differences of what is to be protected and the risks in each field.
Upon considering cybersecurity countermeasures, in “Society5.0” and “Connected Industries” where cyberspace and physical space are highly incorporated, because companies are connected, data distributed and services are provided between different industries, security considerations should be considered from a cross-sectoral and cross-industry perspective. Therefore, the Cross-Sectoral Sub Working Group was launched under Working Group 1, where issues are collected, categorized by industry to uncover security issues commonly faced by all industrial areas and discussed to develop appropriate countermeasures. Its first meeting is to be held on October 5 (Fri), 2018.
In the Cross-Sectoral Sub Working Group, efforts made by the sub working group of each industrial field are shared, while common security issues and related countermeasures are highlighted and considered, which are reflected in the Cyber-Physical Security Framework.
The first meeting is scheduled to be held on October 5 (Fri), 2018.
