METI to Hold Events to Attract Domestic and Overseas Attention to Made-in-Hokkaido-Products and Tourism
PR activities to support Hokkaido Prefecture in recovering from damage caused by the earthquake in September 2018

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) will hold events to attract public attention to Made-in-Hokkaido-products and tourism in Hokkaido Prefecture to support the prefecture in recovering from damage caused by the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake that occurred in September 2018. These events will be held in collaboration with AEON supermarket chains in Malaysia and Hong Kong, YATA Department Store in Hong Kong and RedMart, an e-commerce supermarket, in Singapore. Moreover, taking the opportunity of the Sixth Japan-Vietnam Festival in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, METI and JETRO will hold another event to provide visitors with an opportunity to try and then purchase Hokkaido-originated foods as an effort to support Hokkaido Prefecture in recovering from the earthquake damage. To support the prefecture in the field of tourism, METI and JETRO will invite14 overseas tourism companies and 15 representatives of the Miss International Beauty Pageant on promotional tours of Hokkaido Prefecture.
1. Collaborative PR project with AEON supermarket chains in Malaysia and Hong Kong
From October 29 to November 5, 2018, in collaboration with AEON CO. (M) BHD., Malaysia, METI and JETRO will hold promotional events to attract consumer attention to Hokkaido-originated products and tourism in the prefecture. At major AEON shops in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city, and Johor Bahru, they will provide consumers with an opportunity to taste seasonal Hokkaido seafood products, including fall salmon and saury, and encourage them to purchase such products. Along with this, METI and JETRO will call visitor attention to tourism in Hokkaido Prefecture to stimulate demand for Hokkaido.
From March 7 to 27, 2019 in Hong Kong, in collaboration with AEON Stores Co., Limited, METI and JETRO will hold an event titled the “Hokkaido Fair” and sell Made-in-Hokkaido products at AEON Stores supermarket chains in Hong Kong and through its e-commerce website called “AEON City.com.” JETRO will support the prefecture in enlisting companies to sell their products at the fair and in promoting sales of such products at the event. It will start the call for applicants in November 2018 and hold a business matching event in early December 2018 in Hokkaido Prefecture. Moreover, JETRO will utilize the fair to call public attention to tourism in the prefecture.
2. Collaborative project with YATA Department Store in Hong Kong
From January 17 to February 8, 2019, METI and JETRO will hold an event titled “YATA x Hokkaido Fair 2018” featuring products at YATA Department Store in Hong Kong and on its e-commerce website. Through these sales approaches, they will strive to reach as many consumers as possible. JETRO will support businesses in selecting products to be sold at the fair, will inspire consumers to buy such products at the fair and will utilize the event to attract tourists to Hokkaido.
3. Collaborative project with RedMart in Singapore
Scheduled from around February to March 2019, METI and JETRO will hold an event in collaboration with RedMart, Singapore’s largest e-commerce food shopping website and sell Made-in-Hokkaido products on the website. JETRO will call for companies to sell their products and also will support them in attracting consumers’ attention. Targeting certain product categories, including confectionary, beverages, dairy and marine products, JETRO is now calling for companies to sell their products on the website. 4. Event to be held taking the opportunity provided by the Sixth Japan Vietnam Festival in Ho Chi Minh City
From January 19 (Sat.) to 20 (Sun.), 2019, taking the opportunity provided by the Sixth Japan Vietnam Festival in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, METI and JETRO will hold another event to provide visitors with an opportunity to try and then buy Hokkaido-originated foods as an effort to support Hokkaido Prefecture in recovering from the earthquake damage. Along with this, they will call public attention to tourism in Hokkaido Prefecture.
5. Inviting 14 overseas tourism companies to tour Hokkaido Prefecture
For three days from October 26 to 28, 2018, METI and JETRO will host 24 people, mainly from 14 overseas tourism companies with branches in Japan, to tour Hokkaido Prefecture. On October 26, these visitors will attend a business exchange in Sapporo, and for the rest of the period, they will visit Akaigawa Village, Niseko Town and Toyako Town. The 14 overseas tourism companies consist of nine from China, two from Hong Kong, two from the ROK and one from Malaysia and all of the 24 representatives are from Asian agencies.
6. PR project inviting representatives from the Miss International Beauty Pageant
On October 27 (Sat.), 2018, METI and JETRO will invite 15 Miss Visit Japan Tourism Ambassadors, who are also representatives of the Miss International Beauty Pageant, to Hokkaido, as a project organized by the Japan Tourism Agency. These representatives will visit a variety of places and companies mainly in Sapporo City, and will attract public attention to the industries and tourism in the prefecture through their own SNS pages by communicating information to their respective audiences in their home countries and regions.
These 15 representatives will be invited from the following 14 countries and regions: the ROK, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Russia, the United States (Hawaii and Guam), Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Viet Nam, Mongolia, Myanmar and Germany.
