Demonstration Test of Autonomous Valet Parking Functions to be Held

October 23, 2018

From November 13 to 15, 2018, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) will publicize the Demonstration Test of Autonomous Valet Parking Functions. This is a test that the Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI), to which METI and MLIT have commissioned the project, has been developing as one of the specific use case examples toward the achievement of autonomous driving technologies.

1. Outline

The autonomous valet parking system, the test target, is a system in which three elements shown in the picture below (i.e., vehicles, a control center and parking-lot infrastructure) work together and interact, thereby making unmanned autonomous driving at low speed possible in a limited area from which pedestrians and other vehicles are excluded.

In using the autonomous valet parking lot, users, who are registered in advance, are able leave their vehicles at any appropriate convenient location, (e.g., near the entrance of a facility attached to the parking lot), and send a request to the control center to allow the vehicle to park itself and later for the car to return to the driver to be picked up from a convenient location. The system governed by these procedures allows the control center to communicate with the target vehicle allowing it to safely and autonomously park itself and return to a suitable location close to the driver when requested at low speed.

The demonstration test, which will be publicized as mentioned above, will confirm the capabilities of the autonomous valet parking system. Along with this, JARI will provide a hands-on event in which participants can experience the autonomous parking system, which is expected to be popular in the near future, and will showcase and explain challenges that current parking lots are facing and services involving parking lots that are expected to be constructed in the future.
