On November 5, 2018, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), IoT Acceleration Lab and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) opened calls for new projects for the Sixth IoT Lab Selection as a public-private joint effort for supporting outstanding IoT projects.
With the advent of IoT, big data and AI, industries and society as a whole are seeing significant changes all over the world. In response to this situation, it is necessary for Japan, as well as other countries, to create new IoT business models, uncover and develop IoT platform creators, and use them as a driving force for new growth.
Aiming to achieve these goals, the IoT Acceleration Lab will collaborate with government-related organizations, financial institutions, venture capital businesses and other entities, and provide financial and mentoring support and support for regulatory reforms and standardization with outstanding IoT projects selected from the viewpoint of growth potential, leadership, scalability (openness), and commitment to society.
2. Targets for support
Projects involving business utilizing IoT, big data and AI, including the development of software, hardware prototypes, R&D and demonstrations therefor. In the Sixth IoT Lab Selection, two new special awards, i.e., the Regional Revitalization Award and the Entrepreneur Award, will be established and winners will be selected.
Details of the Regional Revitalization Award
METI, the IoT Acceleration Lab and NEDO will recognize an outstanding project utilizing IoT, big data and AI contributing to solutions to regionally-unique challenges and revitalization of regional economy. They expect the winner to be one utilizing IoT in overcoming regional challenges, for e.g., depopulation, overcrowding, or aging society, or those integrating traditional industries and IoT-based promotion for attracting overseas tourists to Japan (but do not limit a winner to such projects).
Details of the Entrepreneur Award
METI, the IoT Acceleration Lab and NEDO will recognize an outstanding project in which participants utilize the existing human resources, skills and knowhow of the current organization and lead new, advanced initiatives inside the organization or promote innovations in new organizations in such forms as spin-off, carve-out and spin-out.

5. Explanatory meeting on the call
