Japan and Thailand Hold Government-Private Workshop on Clean Energy Technology

November 12, 2018

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been promoting the private sector’s efforts to disseminate low-carbon technologies in overseas and support developing countries in energy transition to clean energy. As part of this effort, on November 15, 2018, METI will hold a Japan-Thailand Government-Private Workshop on Clean Energy Technology in Bangkok, Thailand. This event will be held under the framework of the Japan-Thailand Energy Policy Dialogue* under the chairmanship of senior working-level officials in Japan and Thailand.

It is indispensable for creation of innovations and new markets to develop and disseminate technologies along with advancement of policy- and system- making. With this workshop as motivation, Japan will embark on making use of its knowledge and experience in making policies and systems in Thailand, enriching Japan-Thailand cooperation to develop projects taking advantage of innovative technologies, and encouraging Thailand to vitalize efforts involving market creation and business activities in Thailand.

*Note: The Japan-Thailand Energy Policy Dialogue is a framework established in July 2015 in which Japan and Thailand aim to promote bilateral cooperation at a working level in the field of energy, including oil, natural gas, coal, renewable energy, energy conservation and comprehensive energy strategies.

1. Background and purpose

The year of 2019 will be an important year for both Japan and Thailand since Japan will serve as the G20 chair and Thailand will serve as the ASEAN chair, and this will be a splendid opportunity for Japan and Thailand to further enrich bilateral relationships.

Against this backdrop, on November 15, 2018, METI will hold a Japan-Thailand Government-Private Workshop on Clean Energy Technology in Bangkok, Thailand, in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy of the country. This workshop is part of the efforts for enhancing Japan-Thailand cooperation in the fields of energy and climate change under the framework of the Japan-Thailand Energy Policy Dialogue in which the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of Japan and the Ministry of Energy of Thailand serve as co-heads.

At the beginning of the workshop, a representative from the International Energy Agency (IEA) will deliver a keynote speech concerning the current situations and perspectives of global energy transition, including ASEAN economies, IEA-ASEAN cooperation and other issues. The program following this will bring together representatives from governmental organizations, international organizations and private companies, and participants will share information on successful case examples and knowhow involving past Japan-Thailand projects for low-carbonization by introducing energy conservation and renewable energy technologies. In addition, a panel discussion will be held focusing on specific subjects, e.g., measures for promoting business in promising fields in which low-carbonization will bring about the creation of new markets and business growth.

With this workshop as motivation, METI will aim to deploy related efforts in the fields of energy and climate change across other countries in the ASEAN region, in collaboration with Thailand, the 2019 ASEAN chair.
