Commendation Ceremony for Winners of the Contest for Female Entrepreneurs Support Efforts to be Held

December 5, 2018

On December 12 (Wed.), 2018, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will hold the FY2018 Contest for Female Entrepreneurs Support Efforts to recognize outstanding case examples of organizations engaging in efforts for supporting women in starting businesses. This contest aims to create new leading role models to support female entrepreneurs and also aims to disseminate such role models to other regions.

1. Background

Many women in Japan are facing challenges in finding a balance between life events and their careers. Starting businesses is an effective mean for encouraging such women to remain in, enter or re-enter the workforce. However, many women often face gender-based challenges in starting businesses when they wish to return to economic life after a period of maternity or child-rearing leave. Many of the challenges lie in processes that must be completed before they decide on, or begin preparations for starting a business.

To overcome this situation, in FY2016, METI launched the Network for Support Female Entrepreneurs project, aiming to support women in starting businesses. Under the project, METI established ten regional groups involved in the network across Japan. Each regional group is led by regional financial institutions, industrial and start-up support organizations, and private entities and NPOs engaging in female-career consulting services.

Along with operating an enhanced system to support women in the process before deciding on and preparing for starting a business, the network established a cross-regional support system for entrepreneurial women and has been providing thorough meticulous support services that meet their demands, for e.g., acting as a bridge between such women and financial institutions or organizations for supporting women in starting businesses, aiming to provide a network system in a secure manner to assist female entrepreneurs who have just started a business and are facing challenges in business growth.

METI will hold the FY2018 Contest for Support Female Entrepreneurs to recognize outstanding efforts for supporting female entrepreneurs by companies, NPOs and other support organizations that belong to the network. This contest aims to create new leading role models for supporting female entrepreneurs and also aims to disseminate such role models to other regions.

In the contest, five associations entering the Network Support Category and six associations entering the Individual Support Category will make presentations, as finalists selected by the first examination (document screening) among 45 applicants as entries in the contest. Following this, an examination committee of external experts will examine the presentations and METI will recognize selected associations and organizations as winners of the Grand Awards and other awards.
