Ninth Japan-Mongolia Government and Business Sector Joint Committee Held

On December 12, 2018, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) held the ninth Japan-Mongolia Government and Business Sector Joint Committee in Tokyo. As a side event of the meeting, on December 13, 2018, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), the government of Mongolia and the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry jointly held a Japan-Mongolia Economic Partnership Forum. As a representative of METI, Mr. Yoshihiro Seki, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, attended the two events, and H.E. Mr. Ukhnaa Khurelsukh, Prime Minister of Mongolia, delivered speeches at these events taking the opportunity of his visit to Japan.

1. Ninth Japan-Mongolia Government and Business Sector Joint Committee

On December 12, 2018, METI held the ninth Japan-Mongolia Government and Business Sector Joint Committee in Tokyo. As a co-chair of the meeting, State Minister Seki attended the meeting and expressed Japan’s expectations that the discussion results of the meeting will lead to development of specific Japan-Mongolia cooperation projects. Moreover, the government officials and representatives of the private sector in both countries explained examples of cooperation projects, such as efforts in the cashmere industry, and following this, the two sides exchanged proactive views on issues to be improved and challenges in business development in Mongolia. In the closing ceremony of the meeting, Prime Minister Khurelsukh delivered remarks as the first prime minister of Mongolia who attended a meeting of the committee, and showed Mongolia’s expectations for expanded exports taking advantage of the Japan-Mongolia Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) in certain fields, for e.g., agriculture, livestock farming, and light industries, as well as those for expanded investments by Japanese companies mainly in SMEs in Mongolia.

In 2007, the leaders of Japan and Mongolia agreed on a joint statement and the Basic Action Plan for the Next Ten Years. Under these agreements, the two sides decided to expand Japan-Mongolia trade and investment and to fortify their cooperation relationships, and also decided to upgrade the regular consultations between METI and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Mongolia at the time to the Japan-Mongolia Government and Business Sector Joint Committee, bringing together representatives of private companies and other entities.

2. Japan-Mongolia Economic Partnership Forum

On December 13, 2018, as a side event of the meeting, JETRO, the government of Mongolia and the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry jointly held a Japan-Mongolia Economic Partnership Forum. Prime Minister Khurelsukh and State Minister Seki delivered respective speeches, as guests of honor, explained efforts by the government of Mongolia and Japan-Mongolia cooperation projects that METI has been advancing, and expressed their expectations for future cooperation to further fortify economic ties between the countries.

At the forum, speakers of both countries conveyed to many Japanese companies, including SMEs, that are interested in Mongolia the attractiveness of investments in the country, including explanation of the latest situations of investment environments and specific case examples of successful businesses in the country.
