The WTO Ninth Meeting for Exploratory Work on Electronic Commerce Held

On December 18, 2018, the ninth meeting for the Exploratory Work on Electronic Commerce of the World Trade Organization (WTO) was held in Geneva, Switzerland.

On December 18 (same as local time), 2018, the ninth meeting for the WTO Exploratory Work on Electronic Commerce was held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Based on the Joint Statement on Electronic Commerce issued at the 11th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC11) held in December 2017, the meeting was held to advance exploratory work towards future WTO negotiations. From the Japanese side, representatives from both the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) participated in the meeting.

At the meeting, the WTO members who had submitted proposals explained them and exchanged views with the participants.

On December 13, 2017, at MC11, 71 Members that share the goal of advancing electronic commerce work in the WTO issued a joint statement.

Reference 2: WTO Meeting for Exploratory Work on Electronic Commerce

Since its inauguration in March 2018, the meetings have been held in Geneva once a month (except for August). These meetings brought together approximately 80 Members, including the non-participants stipulated in the joint statement issued in December 2017, and these Members have been holding discussions toward future WTO negotiations on trade-related aspects of electronic commerce.
