The Japan Patent Office (JPO), jointly with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Japan Patent Attorneys Association (JPAA), and the National Center for Industrial Property Information and Training (INPIT), has been implementing the Patent Contest and the Design Patent Contest.
Through these contests, the organizers honor outstanding inventions and designs created by students in high schools, technical colleges, and universities throughout Japan while supporting the filing of such winning invention and design applications with the JPO. In this contest, a total of 61 recipients were selected in the categories of invention (30) and design (31).
Additionally, the organizers grant the JPO Commissioner's Awards to outstanding inventions or designs that have been successfully commercialized from among those that were previously honored. The recipient of the JPO Commissioner's Award for this fiscal year was also selected.
1. Outline of the Patent Contest and Design Patent Contest
The JPO, jointly with MEXT, the JPAA, and INPIT, selects and honors outstanding inventions and designs created by students in high schools, technical colleges, and universities throughout Japan, for the purpose of increasing the awareness of intellectual property and the understanding of associated systems among students. See the list of recipients for the selection results for this fiscal year.
The winners are granted the following privileges by the organizers during the process from filing an application to being granted patent rights;
- Free advice from patent attorneys
- Subsidies covering patent/design application fees, examination request fees, and annual patent fees or design registration fees (for the first three years)
2. FY2018 JPO Commissioner's Awards
The JPO has been granting the JPO Commissioner's Awards, which are to be granted to outstanding inventions or designs from among the previous Award winners which have been successfully commercialized after utilizing the patent rights or design rights registered through support received thanks to this contest.
The winner of the FY2018 JPO Commissioner's Award is as follows.
[Title of the invention] Ice cream bringing out the flavor of Makuwauri (oriental melon)
[Patent right] Patent No. 6041413 (awarded in the FY2015 Patent Contest)
[Recipient] Makuwauri Hirometai (a team aiming to popularize oriental melons), Gifu Prefectural Norin High School
Efforts for commercialization
Gifu Prefectural Norin High School has worked to develop a production method of ice cream bringing out the flavor of Makuwauri (oriental melon) with the aim of reviving Makuwauri, a local traditional fruit. The school submitted the production method developed by its students for the FY2015 Patent Contest and won the award. The school filed an application with the support given as a privilege and obtained a patent right in November 2016.
In 2016, the school formulated Makuwauri Hirometai consisting of its students and has been devising a package design and carrying out PR activities of Makuwauri ice cream, which was developed based on the patent right. In August 2017, Makuwauri Hirometai held a Makuwauri Gourmet Fair in collaboration with Motosu City, the Commerce and Industry Association, the Tourist Association and local companies. During the fair, multiple stores offered Makuwauri ice cream, and sweets, such as parfaits using Makuwauri ice cream, were sold. Additionally, Makuwauri Hirometai has joined local events and food exhibitions held at department stores to sell and disseminate Makuwauri ice cream.
At present, Makuwauri ice cream is being sold at local farmers' markets and roadside stations. A total of more than 25,000 units have been sold so far.
