METI to Hold “Regional Business Conference in Ibaraki”

Promoting direct investment in Japan's regions

January 18, 2019

On February 19 (Tue.) and 20 (Wed.), 2019, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and Ibaraki Prefecture will jointly hold a conference titled “Regional Business Conference (RBC) in Ibaraki”. The organizers will invite overseas companies to the RBC in order to convey information on the attractiveness of business environments in Ibaraki Prefecture to the world.

1. Purpose

Over the next few years, Japan will host international sports events, such as the Rugby World Cup in 2019 and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. Taking these opportunities, METI will encourage municipalities to convey information on attractive business environments in their regions to the rest of the world, setting the time goal at 2020.

As one of the efforts to this end, between 2018 and 2020, METI and JETRO will sequentially hold a series of RBC projects. In these projects, they and municipalities proactive to attract foreign-based companies to their regions will collaboratively invite foreign-based companies to Japan that are highly interested in investment in specific Japanese regions. Heads of municipalities will show their attractiveness to such companies through sales representatives, and business matching and other events between foreign-based and regional companies will be held.

METI hereby announces that METI, JETRO and Ibaraki Prefecture will jointly hold a “Regional Business Conference in Ibaraki.”

2. Details of the RBC in Ibaraki

Ibaraki Prefecture is the home of many advanced research institutes as seen in the fact that nearly one-third of the national research institutes cluster in the prefecture, and the prefecture provides quality research and development (R&D) environments that may facilitate creation of innovations.

Moreover, the Tsukuba International Strategic Zone in the prefecture focuses on open innovations in the field of life science as its core program, and in light of this, the RBC in Ibaraki will: invite overseas companies in the field of life science (see Appendix 1), aiming to encourage more overseas companies to establish R&D bases in the prefecture; provide a speech by the Governor of Ibaraki Prefecture as a sales representative of the prefecture; and hold a networking event and a business matching event between invited foreign-based companies and regional companies and research institutes in the prefecture.
