February 15, 2019
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been promoting the private sector’s efforts to disseminate low-carbon technologies overseas and support developing countries in transitions to clean energy sources.
As part of this effort, on February 27, 2019, a Japan-Vietnam Government-Private Workshop on Clean Energy Technology will be held under the framework of the Japan-Vietnam Energy Working Group under the chairmanship of senior working-level officials in Japan and Viet Nam.
For disseminating the achievements of innovations and facilitating the creation of new markets, development of business environments through efforts for technical development and dissemination of such technologies is indispensable in addition to advancement of domestic policy- and system-making in respective countries. Motivated by this workshop, Japan will encourage Viet Nam to make use of the knowledge and experiences that Japan has accumulated in the field of clean energy in formulating policy and related systems in Viet Nam. Moreover, Japan will encourage Viet Nam to intensify activities involving creation of clean energy market and related business activities by further deepening the cooperation between the two countries on development of projects which utilize innovative technologies.
1. Background and purpose
Japan and Viet Nam have been cooperating in advancing efforts including the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM)*1 for worldwide low-carbonization as a countermeasure against climate change.
Under the framework of the Japan-Viet Nam Energy Working Group*2, on February 27, 2019, METI, in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Viet Nam, will hold a Japan-Viet Nam Government-Private Workshop on Clean Energy Technology as part of the efforts for enhancing Japan-Viet Nam cooperation in the fields of energy and climate change.
At the beginning of the workshop, a representative of the International Energy Agency (IEA) will deliver a keynote speech concerning the current situations and perspectives of global energy transition, including ASEAN economies, IEA-ASEAN cooperation and other issues. The program following this will bring together representatives of governmental organizations, international organizations and private companies, and participants will share information on successful case examples and knowhow involving past Japan-Viet Nam projects for low-carbonization by introducing energy conservation technologies and renewable energy technologies.
METI will aim to expand these bilateral efforts in the fields of energy and climate change, the issues to be discussed at the workshop, to other countries in the ASEAN region as part of its ASEAN-wide efforts.
*1: The JCM offers a framework in which Japan's efforts to provide outstanding low-carbon technologies and products are appropriately evaluated as Japan’s contributions to CO2 reduction.
