Preliminary Report of the 2018 Census of Manufacture Compiled

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) compiled statistics concerning the manufacturing industry (the census of manufacture) in 2018 as of June 1, 2018. The census discovered that the total number of employees was 7,635,444 and the total shipment value of manufactured products*1 was 317.2473 trillion yen.*2

1. Targets of the census

The census aims to uncover the number of employees and the shipment value of manufactured products, targeting establishments that [i] belong to the manufacturing industry in Japan, which are classified in Division E of the Japan Standard Industrial Classification, excluding head offices and other equivalents not involved in manufacturing or processing, and [ii] have four or more employees.

2. Outline of the results (targeting establishments with four or more employees)

  1. Overall condition
    As of June 1, 2018, there were 187,000 establishments, the aggregation target number in the census, while the number of employees thereof was 7,635,444.
    In 2017, the product shipment value of the establishments in the manufacturing industry was 317.2473 trillion yen, while the total added value*3 was 102.9012 trillion yen.
  2. Conditions by sector
    Looking at the number of establishments by sector of the manufacturing industry, the manufacture of fabricated metal products was marked the highest (25,231 establishments), followed by the manufacture of food (24,747). As for changes in composition rates from the previous year, the manufacture of fabricated metal products showed an increase of 0.1 percentage points, while the manufacture of food showed a decrease of 0.1 percentage points.
     
    Looking at the number of employees, the food production industry was the highest (1,128,088 employees), followed by the manufacture of transportation equipment (1,073,048). As for changes in composition rates from the previous year, the food production industry showed a decrease of 0.1 percentage points while the manufacture of transportation equipment showed an increase of 0.1 percentage points.
     
    Looking at the product shipment value of the establishments in the manufacturing industry, the manufacture of transportation equipment was marked the highest (67.8717 trillion yen), followed by the manufacture of food (28.8239 trillion yen). As for changes in composition rates from the previous year, the manufacture of transportation equipment showed a decrease of 0.2 percentage points, while the food production industry also showed a decrease of 0.3 percentage points.
     
    Looking at the added value by sector in the manufacturing industry, the manufacture of transportation equipment marked the highest value (18.5535 trillion yen), followed by the manufacture of chemical and allied products (11.4526 trillion yen). As for changes in composition rates from the previous year, the manufacture of transportation equipment and the manufacture of chemical and allied products showed a decrease of 0.3 percentage points, respectively.

*1. Product shipment value, etc. = product shipment, etc. + shipment of metal scrap and waste in the manufacturing processes + income involving processing fees + other income (in terms of values, respectively)
*2. This aggregated data is preliminary, and it may be different from aggregated results in the revised report, which will be released at a later date.
*3. Added value = product shipment, etc. + (product inventory at the end of the target year - product inventory in the beginning of the target year) + (price of semi-finished and partly finished products at the end of the target year - price of semi-finished and partly finished products in the beginning of the target year) - (estimated liquor tax, tobacco tax, gasoline tax and municipal gasoline tax + estimated consumption tax) - price of materials used, etc. - amount of depreciation (in terms of values, respectively)
Note: The added value includes gross added value regarding establishments with 4 to 29 employees.

3. Future schedule of releasing the revised report

METI will release a summarized table of the industry-based census, in which major items of the census are aggregated, by May 2019. Following this, it will release a table of the industry-based census, a table of the product item-based census and a table of the region-based census in a sequential manner.
