METI to hold “e-Sports” Seminar

March 4, 2019

On March 14 (Thur.), 2019, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will hold a seminar titled “Seminar toward further popularization of e-Sports in Japan.”

1. Details of the seminar

The e-Sports* field has been attracting a growing number of people in a variety of countries in recent years. The global market scale is estimated to be about 1.1 billion dollars as of today and is expected to expand to about 1.8 billion dollars in 2022. The e-Sports market in Japan with a scale of less than 5.0 billion yen, is smaller than the markets in the United States, China and the Republic of Korea. However, Japan is in a period of forming this market as seen by the increase in the number of e-Sports-related businesses and competitions, and a large number of companies and associations, not only in the game industry but also in other industries, are showing interest in the e-Sports market.

In Part I of the seminar, experts on the e-Sports markets inside and outside Japan who have been invited by METI will make presentations on the current situation of e-Sports in Japan and the current situation of the e-Sports markets expanding in China and the ROK ahead of Japan. In Part II of the seminar, a panel discussion will be held, bringing together members of professional e-Sports teams and operators of game communities, and panelists will hold presentations on future approaches to healthy development of the e-Sports market in Japan.

*Note: The term “e-Sports” is an abbreviation of “electronic sports” and a collective term for video game-based competitions in a similar way to other sports competitions. At competitions held in various countries around the world, game players compete with each other before large audiences.
