This section explains 645 registered regional collective trademarks as of the end of 2018 by prefecture and regional product.

(2) Outline of the Regional Collective Trademark System

Under the system, if applicants satisfy predetermined requirements, they are eligible to successfully register their trademarks of letters, i.e., regional collective trademarks, a combination of the name of the region and the name of the product or service, which is often used as a regional brand.*

*Note: Under the system, applicants are allowed to register a trademark of letters consisting of the name of the region and the name of the product or service only if the trademark is famous across Japan.

Some right holders who successfully registered regional collective trademarks offered comments about the effects of the trademarks, such as improvement of the superiority of regional brands, enhancement of the motivation among members of the associations and contributions to developing countermeasures against counterfeit products, thanks to the acquisition of the trademark right.
