The Japan Patent Office
The Japan Patent Office (JPO) hereby released the Regional Collective Trademark Guide Book 2019, a compilation presenting: an outline of the Regional Collective Trademark System, case examples of leading associations taking advantage of the system, the JPO’s measures for supporting associations and other information. The JPO hopes that everyone engaging in efforts for vitalizing their own regional brands read the guide book.
1. Outline of the guide book
Since the JPO’s inauguration of the Regional Collective Trademark System in 2006, many associations have been making use of the system to further improve the superiority of their regional specialties’ brands rich with attractiveness and to conduct countermeasures against counterfeit products.
The Regional Collective Trademark Guide Book 2019 explains the latest case examples of leading associations taking advantage of the system and also presents an outline of the system, the JPO’s measures for supporting associations and 645 registered regional collective trademarks as of the end of 2018.
The JPO hopes that the guide book will serve as a reference for associations and other entities that are engaging in efforts for vitalizing their regional brands in improving the attractiveness of such brands.

2. Distribution of the paper booklets
The JPO has been distributing paper booklets of the guide book for free of charge. If you wish to attain a booklet, contact the division in charge shown at the end of this press release or the closest Intellectual Property Office of the Regional Bureaus of Economy, Trade and Industry or the Okinawa General Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry Department. Please note that the number of booklets to be distributed is limited.

[i] Case examples of the successful utilization of a regional collective trademark
- This section provides key points of successful improvement of brands achieved by leading associations, the background to the filing of an application for a regional collective trademark, effects brought about by the acquisition of a trademark right and other information.
- This section also provides comments of not only right holders but also people in the sales sector trading regional products so as to provide fresh opinions of people directly involved in production of such products.
[ii] Explanations of the registered regional collective trademarks across Japan
This section explains 645 registered regional collective trademarks as of the end of 2018 by prefecture and regional product.
(2) Outline of the Regional Collective Trademark System
Under the system, if applicants satisfy predetermined requirements, they are eligible to successfully register their trademarks of letters, i.e., regional collective trademarks, a combination of the name of the region and the name of the product or service, which is often used as a regional brand.*
*Note: Under the system, applicants are allowed to register a trademark of letters consisting of the name of the region and the name of the product or service only if the trademark is famous across Japan.
Some right holders who successfully registered regional collective trademarks offered comments about the effects of the trademarks, such as improvement of the superiority of regional brands, enhancement of the motivation among members of the associations and contributions to developing countermeasures against counterfeit products, thanks to the acquisition of the trademark right.
