Announcement of the FY 2018 Nadeshiko Brands and Semi-Nadeshiko Brands

METI selected 64 listed enterprises for their outstanding efforts in encouraging women's success!

March 22, 2019

On March 22, 2019, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) jointly selected 42 TSE-listed enterprises that are outstanding in terms of encouraging the empowerment of women in the workplace and granted them the Nadeshiko Brand designation by industry.

In addition, METI and the TSE selected 22 semi-successful enterprises as Semi-Nadeshiko Brands regardless of industries.

Furthermore, the FY2018 Report on the Nadeshiko Brands presents a “List of the Nadeshiko Challenge Enterprises.” The list shows efforts of over 300 outstanding enterprises in encouraging women’s success in the workplace and the current situations of their corporate disclosures involved in such efforts. In addition, the report explains enterprises that have been engaging in characteristic empowerment initiatives as “Noteworthy Enterprises.”

1. Outline of the Nadeshiko Brands

The Nadeshiko Brand is an initiative aiming to introduce certain TSE-listed enterprises that are outstanding in terms of encouraging the empowerment of women in the workplace as attractive stocks to investors who put emphasis on improving corporate value in the mid- and long-term, thereby further enhancing the interests of investors in such outstanding enterprises and accelerating efforts to encourage women’s success in the workplace.

METI and the TSE made assessment of approximately 3,600 enterprises listed in all TSE sections by scoring them based on their efforts necessary for diversity management to improve corporate value and the level of information disclosures concerning the efforts. Following this, they selected 42 enterprises from each industry as Nadeshiko Brands.

Moreover, METI and the TSE selected 22 semi-successful enterprises as Semi-Nadeshiko Brands regardless of industries.

  1. In the Nadeshiko Brand initiative, enterprises will be firstly selected according to the scoring criteria for measuring the empowerment of women and then be screened based on a point-addition method for candidate enterprises’ financial indices before determining successful enterprises.
  2. Under the Nadeshiko Brands, candidate enterprises will be selected according to: the screening criteria from [i] to [iii] below; and whether or not they have answered the Survey on Enterprises Encouraging Women’s Success in the Workplace, which enterprises are required to respond to in the program.

Whether or not such enterprises have:

  1. Prepared an action plan under the Act on Promoting Active Participation by Women, excluding enterprises with 300 or less employees;
  2. Disclosed the share of women appointed to management posts among the total number of management posts in the database developed by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare on enterprises that have been engaging in empowerment initiatives; and
  3. Secured at least one female member on the board of directors.
    As for the Semi-Nadeshiko Brands, METI and the TSE set the criterion [iii] that candidate enterprises are required to secure at least one female board member, executive officer or director.

2. Selected enterprises as Nadeshiko Brands or Semi-Nadeshiko Brands (in the order of securities code by industry category)

The selected Nadeshiko Brands are shown in pink, while the selected Semi-Nadeshiko Brands are shown in orange. For reference, the enterprises selected as the FY2016 Semi-Nadeshiko Brands are shown with a dot in orange.
