FY2019 “Intellectual Property Achievement Awards” Decided

April 11, 2019

Japan Patent Office

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan Patent Office (JPO) chose individuals and corporations for the FY2019 "Intellectual Property Achievement Awards" to honor their contributions to the development and dissemination of the intellectual property rights system in Japan as well as to awareness-raising activities therefor. Award winners of this year were one individual and six corporations for the Award from Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and three individuals and four corporations for the Award from Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office.

From this fiscal year, focus is newly placed on design-based management to commend individuals who have created internationally accepted excellent designs and contributed to the implementation of an intellectual creation cycle and corporations that are effectively utilizing intellectual property rights while incorporating a design-based management approach.

1. Outline of the “Intellectual Property Achievement Awards”

On Invention Day, April 18th every year (an anniversary of the Patent Monopoly Act established as the first substantial patent law in Japan, which was promulgated on April 18th, 1885), METI and JPO bestow the “Award for Contributor Concerning the Intellectual Property Rights System” to individuals who have contributed to developing and disseminating Japan’s intellectual property rights system as well as to raising awareness thereof, and bestow the “Award for Excellent Corporation Utilizing the Intellectual Property Rights System” to corporations which have most effectively taken advantage of the intellectual property rights system and contributed to its operation and development. The Award from Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry or the Award from Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office is given to award winners and both are collectively called the “Intellectual Property Achievement Award.”

From this fiscal year, focus is newly placed on design-based management, a management approach to utilizing design in establishing brands and creating innovation.
