Call Starts for Applicants for Pilot Areas Willing to Engage in Public Implementation of New Mobility Services Utilizing of IoT and AI

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), in collaboration with trailblazing rural areas intent on engaging in public implementation of new mobility services, will embark on a new initiative titled “Project for the Analysis of Pilot Areas” in order to advance the development of business environments by advancing a variety of related issues, including key points in improving the business feasibility and public acceptance of new mobility services in rural areas, and assessing the impact of such services on regional economies and related institutional challenges. To this end, from April 23 to May 31, 2019, it will open a call for applicants for pilot areas that are willing to cooperate in formulating business plans and analyses of potential business effects and other efforts under the Project for the Analysis of Pilot Areas.
1. Outline of the call
METI and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) have jointly started a new project titled “Smart Mobility Challenge,” aiming to support rural areas and companies in solving challenges in mobility or vitalization of such areas through public implementation of new mobility services.
Aiming to advance the formulation of business plans and analyses of potential business effects in collaboration with trailblazing rural areas intent on engaging in public implementation of new mobility services under the Project for the Analysis of Pilot Areas, METI will open a call for applicants that are interested in cooperating in these efforts. For more information on the call, such as the period of the call, eligible applicants and details of the project, see the Appendix. In addition, METI will collaborate with MLIT’s project tilted “Project for the Promotion of New Mobility Services,” an initiative for supporting entities across Japan in conducting demonstration tests of new mobility services, e.g., MaaS, and it will provide support measures to selected applicants on a priority basis.
Based on the results brought about by the Project for Analysis of Pilot Areas and in collaboration with the Council for Promoting the Smart Mobility Challenge Project, a body scheduled to be inaugurated in the summer of 2019, METI will advance development of business environments by facilitating a variety of related issues, including advancing key points in improving the business feasibility and social acceptability of new mobility services in rural areas, assessing and mitigating the impact of such services on regional economy and related institutional challenges.
