JPO Launches IP Acceleration Program for Startups (IPAS2019)

Initiative connecting startups and IP strategies

April 26, 2019

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) will start a call for applicant businesses for a 2019 initiative under the IP Acceleration Program for Startups (IPAS), titled “IPAS2019,” a program aiming to encourage venture businesses to accelerate their growth by taking advantage of intellectual property (IP).

1. Outline of the IPAS

To collaborate with large companies, develop business overseas and advance their growth, venture businesses should differentiate their business from other companies and establish their own brands, taking advantage of core technologies and ideas.

Under the IPAS, teams of IP mentors consisting of IP and business experts will assist venture businesses in jointly developing strategies that connect business management and IP perspectives so that such businesses are able to grow.

In the IPAS2018, an FY2018 initiative, the JPO supported venture businesses in advancing a variety of efforts, such as brushing up of their business models, establishment of IP strategies tailored to their business, provision of advice on designing a contract with another company, development of an internal IP management system and preparation of a plan for filing patent applications targeting the next few years. From the participants in the IPAS2018, the JPO received many opinions, such as: “We received practical advice, not simply formal or superficial, from experts and people with rich experience” and “We succeeded in development of IP strategies for filing applications that are based on our patent portfolios and analysis results of our competitors and that are tailored to our business structure.”

2. Call for applicant businesses

From April 26 (Fri.), 2019, the JPO will start the first round of a call for applicant businesses for the IPAS2019, targeting unlisted venture businesses engaging in research and development. The second round of the call will start in July 2019.

In the IPAS2019, an FY2019 initiative, the JPO has expanded the number of participating businesses to 15. Furthermore, it has doubled the opportunity of the call for applicants to the first and second rounds so as to encourage venture businesses to more smoothly apply for the program.
