Call for Applicants for the Fifth Tobidase Japan Program Starts

Initiative Subsidized by METI as Measure for Supporting Mid-Ranking Enterprises and SMEs in Developing Business in Emerging Countries

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) hereby announces that a call for applicants started for the “Fifth Tobidase Japan Program: Initiative for Providing Subsidies to Support Mid-Ranking Enterprises and SMEs in Entering Global Growth Markets.” This program targets mid-ranking enterprises and SMEs and aims to subsidize selected enterprises with a portion of the costs necessary for either their development of products and services in emerging countries, such as India and African countries; or their efforts for supporting locals in the target country to create new businesses there.

The closing date of the call is May 31 (Fri.), 2019, at 12:00 p.m.

1. Outline of the program

METI has been advancing a subsidy project titled “FY2019 Project for Cultivating New Markets in Emerging Countries Taking Advantage of Technological Cooperation (Project for International Joint Development for Solving Social Challenges.” As part of this initiative, METI adopted IC Net Limited as a subsidized entity (operator of the project). Under the project, the operator has been advancing a program tilted “Tobidase Japan Program: Initiative for Providing Subsidies to Support Mid-Ranking Enterprises and SMEs in Entering Global Growth Markets,” and this is the call for applicants for the fifth such program.

Targeting mid-ranking enterprises and SMEs, the program: calls for such enterprises’ business plans considered to contribute to solving societal challenges in emerging countries, such as India and African countries; selects outstanding enterprises; and subsidizes the costs of development, demonstration and assessment of products and services jointly conducted with local universities, research institutes, NGOs, companies and other entities; or efforts for supporting locals in the target country in creating new businesses.

The program is expected to become a trigger encouraging more and more Japanese companies to engage in development, demonstration and assessment of products and services in emerging countries, such as India and African countries, or engage in efforts to supporting locals in creating new business. Thought this initiative, METI aims to not only help encourage solutions to societal challenges in target countries, but also to further the vitalization of the Japanese economy.
