Call for Applicants for the FY2019 Best Contributors to Product Safety Awards (PS Awards 2019) Program Starts

Program for supporting enterprises in advancing efforts for developing product safety into their corporate value

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been conducting the Best Contributors to Product Safety Awards program with the aim of encouraging enterprises to make a greater commitment to improving product safety as well as to firmly establish the concept of the value of product safety in Japanese society, and it hereby announces that it will start a call for applicants for the FY2019 Product Safety Awards (PS Awards 2019) program.

The closing date of the call is July 16 (Tue.), 2019. As all enterprises and associations involved in consumer products* are eligible applicants, METI hopes that many will apply for the program.

1. Outline of the Best Contributors to Product Safety Awards

Targeting individual enterprises or associations that are proactively committed to product safety efforts in the manufacturing, import, retail sales and other various industries as applicants, the Best Contributors to Product Safety Awards aim to select and honor outstanding enterprises as Best Contributors to Product Safety based on the results of a strict examination. The awards program evaluates not the safety level of of products that applicant enterprises handle but the commitment by applicant enterprises or associations to activities for product safety.

2.Outline of the call

(1) Examination criteria

An examination committee will examine the applicants’ commitment to securing product safety based on four criteria:

  1. Commitment to manufacturing or importing (or purchasing or selling) safe products;
  2. Commitment to helping users handle products safely;
  3. Commitment to appropriately addressing problems in product safety that emerge after products are shipped; and
  4. Commitment to establishing a culture of product safety

Category for Other Associations - Special Awards (Committee Awards) Associations or enterprises that are involved in business related to consumer products,* not falling into any categories above

*Note: The term “consumer products” means any product supplied mainly for use by general consumers, as stipulated in Article 2 of the Consumer Product Safety Act.

(3) Examination process

An examination committee of experts, representatives of consumer associations and others will examine applicants. The committee will select applicants through the document screening in the primary examination, presentations by screened applicants in the secondary examination, and, if necessary, on-site interviews by committee members and will finalize winners.

3. Schedule of the call and examinations

At separate opportunities, METI will hold a series of face-to-face counseling events for explaining the outline, details of the examination process and the call involving the PS Awards 2019.
