METI Minister Seko Visits the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of Singapore

From May 28 (Tue.) to 31 (Fri.), 2019, Mr. Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of Singapore. In Indonesia, he held individual discussions with: H.E. Mr. Enggartiasto Lukita, Minister of Trade; H.E. Mr. Ignasius Jonan, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources; and H.E. Mr. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs. In Singapore, he held discussions with H.E. Mr. Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Trade and Industry.

1. Bilateral meetings in Indonesia

During his visit to Indonesia, Minister Seko held individual meetings with: Minister Enggartiasto, Minister Jonan and Minister Luhut. At each meeting, the two sides held discussions on a broad range of issues, including bilateral relationships, G20, WTO and RCEP.

(1) Meeting with Minister Enggartiasto

At the meeting with Minister Enggartiasto, Minister Seko requested that Indonesia cooperate in advancing important subjects of the upcoming G20 Ministerial Meeting on Trade and Digital Economy to ensure positive outcomes. Moreover, the two sides held discussions on possible actions for concluding the RCEP negotiations by the end of 2019 and possible approaches to advancing deliberations on reviewing the Japan-Indonesia Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).

(2) Meeting with Minister Jonan

At the meeting with Minister Jonan, Minister Seko outlined the importance of G20 member countries’ cooperation in accelerating the virtuous cycle of environmental friendliness and economic growth through the promotion of innovation and other initiatives toward the upcoming G20 Ministerial Meeting on Energy Transitions and Global Environment for Sustainable Growth, and he received a positive response. Moreover, the two sides held discussions on Japan-Indonesia cooperation in the field of energy.

(3) Meeting with Minister Luhut

Minister Seko exchanged views with Minister Luhut concerning the consolidation of Japan-Indonesia economic ties based on the broad range of shared interests and benefits to both countries, including infrastructure development and individual industrial policies.

2. Third Japan-Indonesia Public-Private Dialogue

Minister Seko attended the Third Japan-Indonesia Public-Private Dialogue. This dialogue was held to provide an opportunity for Minister Luhut to hear the opinions of representatives of Japanese companies developing business in Indonesia concerning challenges related to the business environment and other issues, and for the two sides to then hold discussions on solutions to such challenges. At the dialogue, Minister Seko raised the topic of the importance of solving long-remaining, unsolved challenges in the field of the business environment in Indonesia, including transparent and fair implementation of tax systems, to enable Japanese companies to further accelerate their business development in the country and also enable Indonesia to further enhance competitiveness in the field of exports through such acceleration. Minister Luhut stated that Indonesia will continue to sincerely listen to opinions of Japanese companies in the country and strive to improve the business environment in the country, which was an encouraging response for the business community.

3. Bilateral meeting in Singapore

In Singapore, Minister Seko held a meeting with Minister Chan. The two sides confirmed not only the initiatives involving the Exploratory Work on Electronic Commerce of the World Trade Organization (WTO) but also Japan-Singapore collaboration toward the upcoming G20 Ministerial Meeting on Trade and Digital Economy. In addition, they exchanged views in a frank manner concerning possible actions for concluding the RCEP negotiations by the end of 2019, the potential for Japan-Singapore cooperation in the field of digital technology, and other issues.
