Results Compiled of the Review on the Circumstances Surrounding the Electricity Business toward the Legal Unbundling of the Transmission/Distribution Sector

June 26, 2019

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) compiled the results of the review on the circumstances surrounding the electricity business toward the legal unbundling of the transmission/distribution sector scheduled in April 2020.

1. Background

The amended Electricity Business Act enacted in June 2015 provides that a review should be conducted prior to the legal unbundling of the transmission/distribution sector scheduled in April 2020 with regard to the circumstances surrounding the electricity business, such as the status of power supply and demand, levels of electricity rates, and implementation of measures based on the Strategic Energy Plan.

In light of this, the Advisory Committee for Natural Resources and Energy commenced deliberations at the Subcommittee for Studying Electricity and Gas Basic Policies in September 2018 and has had deliberations on seven occasions in total.

The government compiled the review results concerning the circumstances surrounding the electricity business based on the deliberations at the Subcommittee.
