Call for Applicant Universities that Accept IP Strategy Designers under the Project for Dispatching IP Strategy Designers to Universities
July 4, 2019
The Japan Patent Office (JPO) will start a call for applicant universities that accept the designers of intellectual property strategies (hereinafter referred to as “IP strategy designers”), experts who are dispatched to universities to help them identify their excellent research outcomes and design their IP strategies taking into consideration the standpoint of researchers.
1. Project for Dispatching IP Strategy Designers to Universities
As university research outcomes are a critical sources of knowledge for Japan, it is important to broadly convey such knowledge across society, have it contribute to the development of further research, and implement it in society. To these ends, IP rights are considered to play an important role.
Against this background, the JPO decided to launch a new project titled “Project for Dispatching IP Strategy Designers to Universities.” Under this project, IP strategy designers with expertise in dealing with excellent research outcomes will make up a team with university research administrators (URA) and other personnel responsible for supporting universities in advancing research, and the team will help universities discover research outcomes whose IP rights have not been protected yet in parallel with sharing knowledge and knowhow among the team. Specifically, IP strategy designers will propose to researchers of participating universities future prospects of research outcomes, such as feasibility in further developing such outcomes into larger joint research projects or into commercialization, so as to enhance such research outcomes to the maximum extent possible. Following this, such designers will help the universities design IP strategies by determining research outcomes to be protected and the timing for securing the protection of IP rights and other elements taking into consideration the standpoint of researchers, aiming to achieve the future goals that such researchers wish to reach. Through these approaches, such designers will support universities in creating social value and economic value through the use of IP rights.
Moreover, the JPO will strive to disseminate across Japan the knowledge and knowhow accumulated through all efforts under the project and also to support universities that intend to be committed to further development of research and implementation of their research outcomes in society by identifying their excellent research outcomes and developing IP strategies.
