Call for Applicants for New Diversity Management Selection 100 and Diversity Management Selection 100 Prime in FY2019 Starts on July 17 (Wed.)

An explanatory meeting on the call will be held on July 31 (Wed.)

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been conducting initiatives to introduce to a wide audience the efforts of leading enterprises that connect their diversity management efforts to their business success and to expand the base on which enterprises will promote such management. As part of the initiatives, METI has been recognizing enterprises with outstanding achievements in such management under the METI Minister Award program of the New Diversity Management Selection 100. On July 17 (Wed.), 2019, METI will start a call for applicants for the FY2019 New Diversity Management Selection 100.

In addition, on the same date, METI will start a call for applications for a program titled “Diversity Management 100 Prime,” aiming to bring attention to enterprises that are engaged in the diversity management program called “Diversity 2.02” and create and enhance mid-to long-term corporate value

METI will hold an explanatory meeting on these awards and selection programs on July 31 (Wed.), 2019.

1. Outline of these programs

To strengthen Japanese enterprises’ competitiveness in the face of economic globalization and an aging society with fewer children, it is necessary to promote diversity management as an effective strategy that provides diverse human resources, including women, foreign nationals, the elderly, and people with disabilities, with opportunities to exercise their potential to the greatest extent possible and to take part in the value creation process.

METI inaugurated the New Diversity Management Selection 100 in FY2012, aiming to expand the base on which enterprises will promote diversity management, and has recognized 250 enterprises so far. In FY2017, METI started the Diversity Management Selection 100 Prime program to select outstanding enterprises from those previously recognized under the existing programs, and it has selected 4 enterprises so far.

This program aims to encourage enterprises to utilize diversity in terms of the attributes of human resources and exercise the ability of such resources to the maximum extent possible, thereby enabling the enterprises to continue their management efforts across departments so as to create value added on a continuous basis.

2. Information on calls for applicants for the New Diversity Management Selection 100 and the Diversity Management Selection 100 Prime programs in FY2019

(1) Eligible enterprises and efforts as applicants for the FY2019 New Diversity Management Selection 100 program

Any enterprise that has been making efforts for engaging in diversity management and that turns its diversity management into concrete business successes, regardless of the size of the enterprise, is eligible. METI also welcomes applications by SMEs.

METI will also make a broad call for applicants for these programs, focusing on the following priority issues, or initiatives in which enterprises are expected to further engage in the future.
The Four priority issues in the FY2019 program:

  1. Employment of management personnel with a variety of human resources characteristics
  2. Promotion of diversity in careers
  3. Reform involving ideal approaches to management
  4. Empowerment of foreign nationals, the elderly and people with disabilities in the workplace

METI is looking forward to receiving many applications from enterprises that succeeded in connecting these diversity management efforts above to the enhancement of their corporate value.

(2) Enterprises and efforts eligible for the FY2019 Diversity Management Selection 100 Prime program

Eligible enterprises are those that have been recognized as winners under the Diversity Management Selection 100 and the New Diversity Management Selection 100 and that have been undertaking the Seven Key Actions for Practice under the Diversity 2.0 Action Guidelines (see Appendices 1 and 2) as a management mechanism under which they continue to create mid- to long-term value-added. Please note that enterprises that have not been recognized before are eligible to apply to both the New Diversity Management Selection 100 program and the Diversity Management Selection 100 Prime program in FY2019.

(3) How to apply

Access the following New Diversity Management Selection 100/Diversity Management Selection 100 Prime website, complete an application form in accordance with the application guidance and send the form by postal mail or email to the secretariat. The application form and the guidance will be released on July 17 (Wed.), 2019, on the website below.

(4) Period of the call

From July 17 (Wed.) to September 9 (Mon.), 2019, by 5:00 pm. (applications must arrive by this time on the closing date,)

(5) Application selection and schedule of the commendation ceremony

An examination committee (see Annex 3) will evaluate the applicants and select winners. A commendation ceremony is scheduled to be held on March 16 (Mon.), 2020.

(7) Future schedule (tentative)

From September to October 2019: Document screening
From November to December 2019: Interviews (only applicants for the New Diversity Management Selection 100 program)
January 2020: Presentation examination (only applicants for the Diversity Management Selection 100 Prime program)
March 16, 2020: Commendation ceremony

3. Explanatory meeting on the application for the FY2019 New Diversity Management Selection 100 and the Diversity Management Selection 100 Prime programs

METI will hold an explanatory meeting on the overview information on the FY2019 New Diversity Management Selection 100 program and the Diversity Management Selection 100 Prime program.

At the meeting, METI will hold a panel discussion concerning promotion of diversity management bringing together recognized and selected enterprises in the FY2018 programs and will specifically explain key points of note in filing applications for the FY2019 programs.
