Ten Startups Selected as Recipients of Support Measures under the first round of IPAS2019

August 8, 2019

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) selected ten startups as the recipients of support measures under the first round of a call for applicants for the FY2019 IP Acceleration Program for Startups (IPAS2019), a program for encouraging startups to accelerate their businesses making use of intellectual property (IP). To each selected startup, the JPO will dispatch an “IP Mentoring Team” consisting of selected experts in the fields of business and IP for helping the startups to develop IP strategies for accelerating their businesses.

1. Outline of the IPAS

Under this program, the JPO will consult core technologies or ideas and business plans that respective startups have submitted, identify challenges in businesses and IP faced by the startups as well as areas in which the startups need support, and create an “IP Mentoring Teams” consisting of experts with knowledge and skills that meet each startup.

Through a three-month mentoring program, a respective pair of a selected startup and an IP Mentoring Team will develop a strategy in which business management and IP aspects are combined and will aim to grow the business of the startup.

In response to the first round of a call for applicants for IPAS2019, the JPO received applications from 64 startups, sorted them by document screening and pitch presentations as examinations, and finally selected ten startups as recipients of support measures.

2. IPAS2019 Kick-off event (press conference to announce the selected startups)

On August 28 (Wed.), 2019, the JPO will hold a kick-off event to explain the selected startups under the first round of a call for applicants for IPAS2019 at 31 Builedge Yaesu, Tokyo. Taking this opportunity, some of the startups as participants in IPAS2018 in FY2018 will make presentations on the support measures they received and the results they achieved in the program. Admission is free.

3. Release of related information on the JPO website called “IP BASE”

The JPO will release the details of efforts under IPAS, a list of the startups as recipients of support measures and information on mentors that support such startups on the JPO website called “IP BASE” for startups and IP experts.
