FY2019 Survey on Health and Productivity Management to be Held for Selection of Outstanding Enterprises under the FY2020 Health & Productivity Stock Selection Program and the 2020 Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition (Large Enterprise Category) Program

August 30, 2019

Following on from FY2018, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) will jointly select outstanding listed enterprises engaging in a health and productivity management program in which enterprises focus on and strategically carry out efforts with regard to their employees’ health from a management perspective, in principle, on a one-company per industry basis, under the 2020 Health & Productivity Stock Selection program.

In addition, METI will conduct a program titled “2020 Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition (Large Enterprise Category)”* in collaboration with Nippon Kenko Kaigi.** Under this program, large enterprises, not limited to listed enterprises, will be selected and recognized for their outstanding health and productivity management practices undertaken in collaboration with insurers.

Prior to this, METI will send a questionnaire sheet for the FY2019 Survey on Health and Productivity Management, on August 30, 2019, to enterprises and publicize the survey for the purpose of ascertaining and analyzing the current progress of and secular changes in enterprises’ health and productivity management practices.

The results of the survey will be utilized in selecting enterprises under the 2020 Health & Productivity Stock Selection program and in recognizing enterprises under the 2020 Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition (Large Enterprise Category) program, and METI will send a summary of evaluation results to the enterprises that have answered all questions.

1. Outline of the Health & Productivity Stock Selection program and the Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition (Large Enterprise Category) program

Health and productivity management is a practice in which enterprises focus on and strategically carry out efforts with regard to their employees’ health from a management perspective. Enterprise investment in health-conscious activities for employees based on their corporate philosophies will contribute to encouraging the vitality of employees, enhancing productivity and other organizational vitalization, thereby leading to improvement in performance and stock prices as a result.

To this end, as part of the initiatives to achieve the goal set in the FY2019 Growth Strategy, METI and the TSE will select exceptional, outstanding enterprises that have been engaging in health and productivity management practices as leading companies out of TSE-listed enterprises under the 2020 Health & Productivity Stock Selection program, and introduce such outstanding enterprises to investors who prioritize the improvement of corporate value from a long-term perspective as an attractive investment option. Through this program, METI will aim to encourage enterprises to engage in activities for health and productivity management practices.

METI has also been recognizing outstanding enterprises under the “Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition (Large Enterprise Category)” program. Under this program, large enterprises, not limited to listed enterprises, will be selected and recognized for their outstanding health and productivity management practices undertaken in collaboration with insurers. METI has been conducting this program jointly with Nippon Kenko Kaigi, an organization consisting of leaders in the business world, associations in the medical field, and municipalities, aiming to increase the number of enterprises that strive to improve health and productivity management practices.

2. Utilization of the survey results

Under the Health & Productivity Stock Selection program and the Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition (Large Enterprise Category) program, enterprises will be recognized based on the results of the FY2019 Survey on Health and Productivity Management, which will be conducted by METI (subcontracted to Nikkei Research Inc.). To be selected and recognized under these programs, enterprises are required to answer all items of the questionnaire sheet.

Furthermore, METI will send a summary of evaluation results to all enterprises that have answered all questions. The summary will describe the level of how well the enterprises have been striving for the practice by industry, points to be evaluated, points that enterprises will need to review and other data, which are necessary information for enterprises to advance their health and productivity management practices. METI strongly recommend enterprises to submit the questionnaire sheet whether the sheet is completed or not.

For details of the survey, e.g., how to fill in the questionnaire sheet, please visit the METI website or contact the subcontracting company, Nikkei Research Inc.
