METI Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takinami Visits the United States, the Republic of Colombia and the Republic of Chile

From September 2 to 8, 2019, Mr. Hirofumi Takinami, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited the United States of America, the Republic of Colombia and the Republic of Chile to attend an APEC Small and Medium Enterprises Ministerial Meeting (APEC SME Ministers Meeting) and other meetings. At the APEC SME Ministers Meeting, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takinami explained Japan’s GLocal Growth Strategy and its Act for Enhancement of SME Robustness, and the concepts of the Strategy and Act were reflected in the 2019 APEC SME Ministerial Statement. During the meeting, he exchanged views with representatives of participating economies. He also exchanged views with stakeholders of the governments and Japanese-affiliated companies in the United States and the Republic of Colombia.

Chile

1. APEC SME Ministers Meeting

On September 5 and 6, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takinami attended the 25th APEC SME Ministers Meeting, which was held in Concepcion, Chile. At the meeting, he explained Japan’s GLocal Growth Strategy and its Act for Enhancement of SME Robustness, and the concepts of the Strategy and Act were reflected in the 2019 APEC SME Ministerial Statement.

2. Bilateral meetings with participating officials outside the APEC SME Ministers Meeting

(1) Exchanging views with H.E. Mr. Gibert B. Kaplan, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Department of Commerce, the United States of America

On September 5, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takinami held a meeting with Under Secretary Kaplan and the two sides exchanged views on economic ties between Japan and the United States of America.

(2) Exchanging views with H.E. Mr. Juan Andres Fontaine, Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism, Chile

On September 6, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takinami held a meeting with Minister Fontaine, the chair of the APEC SME Ministers Meeting, and the two sides exchanged views on bilateral economic ties, including the development of business environments and the field of SMEs.

Colombia

1. Exchanging views with H.E. Ms. Laura Valdivieso, Vice Minister of Trade Industry and Tourism, Colombia

On September 3, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takinami visited Bogota and held a meeting with Vice Minister Valdivieso. The two sides exchanged views on the economic potential in Colombia, promoting bilateral trade and investments, building dialogues for improving business environments in Colombia, establishing a cooperative relationship in the field of infrastructure, and other issues.

2. Exchanging views with H.E. Ms. Carolina Rojas Hayes, Vice-Minister of Mines, Ministry of Mines and Energy, Colombia

On September 3, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takinami visited Bogota and held a meeting with Vice Minister Rojas. The two sides exchanged views on the resource potential in Colombia, establishing further cooperative relationships in the fields of coal and minerals, and other issues.

3. Exchanging views with stakeholders of Japanese-affiliated companies in Colombia

On September 3, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takinami exchanged views with stakeholders of Japanese-affiliated companies developing business in Colombia concerning the current situations of business environments surrounding the companies as well as business potential between Japanese and Colombian enterprises in the fields of resources, energy and technological innovation.

4. Visiting Japanese-affiliated companies in Colombia

On September 3, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takinami visited two Japanese-affiliated companies operating business in the suburbs of Bogota and toured manufacturing floors of these companies.

(1) Castem Colombia S.A.S.

Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takinami visited Castem Colombia S.A.S., a regional SME mainly engaged in manufacturing and sale of precision casting parts through global business deployment, and toured their manufacturing and inspection floors and other sections of the site. Following this, he exchanged views with the staff of the company concerning the current situation of its business activities, its efforts for human resource development and other issues

(2) Hino Motors Manufacturing Colombia, S.A.

Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takinami visited Hino Motors Manufacturing Colombia, S.A., a company mainly engaged in manufacturing and sale of trucks and buses, and toured assembly floors of mid- to small-sized trucks. Following this, he exchanged views with the staff of the company concerning the challenges that the company is facing in developing business in the country and other issues.

The United States

Visiting TerraPower, LLC. and exchanging views
On September 2, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takinami visited Seattle, the United States, toured TerraPower LLC., a leading startup in the country in the field of nuclear energy, and exchanged views with the staff of the company concerning the current situation and challenges that U.S. companies in the field of nuclear power development are facing and other issues.
