Establishing the Carbon Recycling 3C Initiative

September 25, 2019

The Carbon Recycling 3C initiative aims to use CO2 as a fuel and material, and includes 3 specific actions to be undertaken toward this end. The initiative will accelerate technological development based on the Roadmap for Carbon Recycling Technologies announced at the G20 Energy and Environment Ministers' Meeting in June, and will promote innovation while cooperating with other countries.

1.Background and purpose

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization organized the International Conference on Carbon Recycling 2019 and exchanged information regarding Carbon Recycling with representatives from industry, academia and government from around the world.

In order to accelerate disruptive innovation in the development of Carbon Recycling Technology in the future, METI Minister Sugawara announced the Carbon Recycling 3C Initiative.

In this initiative, there are three “C” actions: 1) Promotion of mutual exchange (Caravan), 2) Establishment of R&D and demonstration base (Center of Research), and 3) Promotion of international joint research (Collaboration). Japan will undertake all three C’s in order to realize the goal of C02 as a fuel and material resource, etc..

Especially, regarding Collaboration, and taking the opportunity of this international conference, Minister Sugawara and Minister Canavan for Resources and Northern Australia of the Commonwealth of Australia, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation, including the establishment of meetings of various forms.
