From October 23 (Wed.) to 25 (Fri.), 2019, Mr. MIYAMOTO Shuji, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited the Slovak Republic and the French Republic.
In the Slovak Republic, he accompanied the Slovakia Business Mission, which was organized by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and exchanged views with representatives of Japanese and Slovak companies concerning Japanese companies’ business development in the country. Moreover, he exchanged views with H.E. Mr. Róbert Šimončič, Chief Executive Officer of the Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO), Slovakia, concerning Japan-Slovakia economic cooperation.
In the French Republic, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Miyamoto participated in a meeting on digital trade organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and encouraged stakeholders involved in WTO negotiations from OECD member countries and other countries and industry representatives to make progress under the Osaka Track framework, which was established on the occasion of the G20 Osaka summit meeting.
1. Slovakia Republic
(1) Participating in the JETRO Slovakia Business Mission
At the networking meeting between Japanese companies and Slovak companies, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Miyamoto delivered a speech at the beginning of the meeting and welcomed the recent development of Japan-Slovak economic cooperation. Following this, he exchanged views with participating representatives of Japanese and Slovak companies concerning the feasibility of Japanese companies’ business development in Slovakia.
Parliamentary Vice-Minister Miyamoto visited ESET, a Slovak company engaging in development of security-related software, and exchanged views with representatives of the company concerning the future business development of the company, the country’s business environment and other issues.
(2) Meeting with Chief Executive Officer Šimončič, SARIO
Parliamentary Vice-Minister Miyamoto welcomed the progress in the cooperative relationship between JETRO and SARIO and the two sides exchanged views concerning development of bilateral economic ties and other issues.
2. French Republic (participating in an event related to the Osaka Track)
As part of the Global Forum on Trade 2019, organized by the OECD, a special session on digital trade was held and participants from the governments of a variety of countries, mainly OECD member countries, international organizations (e.g., the WTO), and industry representatives held discussions on rulemaking for digital economy.
Parliamentary Vice-Minister Miyamoto participated in this special session and encouraged other participants to work on rulemaking under the Osaka Track, a framework for making international rules for the digital economy, which was established under the leadership of Japan on the occasion of the G20 Osaka summit meeting.
Industry representatives also stated their views in this session, including their expectations for the OECD on identifying issues for international discussions on digital economy. Participants held lively discussions on the importance of Data Free Flow with Trust (DFFT) and other issues.
