Teams Advance to the Finals of the General Election for Outstanding Regional Brands in the Tohoku Region

- Finals to be held in Sendai City on December 20, 2019 -

November 15, 2019

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the Tohoku Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry have been advancing an event titled “General Election for Outstanding Regional Brands in the Tohoku Region,” and have determined the teams advancing to the finals of the election.

The finals will be held in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, on December 20 (Fri.), 2019. Grand Award and other award recipients will be determined through examination by committee and by votes from the general public.

1. Teams advancing to the finals of the election

The examination committee examined 18 teams entering the election based on the criteria of: the number and details of posts on Instagram by each of the teams, the teams’ ideas on future development of new products and new business, and other activities, and based on the examination results, 10 teams were determined as finalists.

2. Outline of the finals

The finalist teams will hold presentations on their ideas for development of new products and new business. Concerning the details of the presentations, the examination committee will score the teams and general visitors will cast votes to determine the winners of the Grand Award and other awards.

  2. Seminar on branding regional products
    Keynote speech: How to fully convey information on regional specialties to the public - Branching point between success and failure
    Mr. Kitamura Mori, Product Journalist; Professor, Faculty of Comprehensive IT, Cyber University
  3. Presentations by finalist teams
  4. Examination by the examination committee and casting of votes by general visitors (Note: General visitors will be eligible for casting one vote per person.)
  5. Announcement of winners and commendation ceremony

3. Regional Brand Fair in the Tohoku Region

The JPO and the Tohoku Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry will hold a Regional Brand Fair in the Tohoku Region in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. The fair will bring together regional specialties produced by the associations participating in the election.

The fair is a special opportunity for visitors to see and touch a variety of such products in the region. We are looking forward to seeing many of you there.

January 24 (Fri.) and 25 (Sat.), 2020; from 10:00 to 21:00 on both dates (tentative)

4. Reference: Outline of the Regional Collective Trademark System

Under the Regional Collective Trademark System, regional business cooperatives, industry associations, chambers of commerce and industry, NPOs and other associations are eligible for registering their own trademarks consisting of a combination of the name of the region and the name of the product or service, if they satisfy predetermined requirements.

Regional collective trademarks aim to appropriately protect regional brands, thereby contributing to supporting the consolidation of the industrial competitiveness and the revitalization of regional economies by maintaining the trust of businesses. As of the end of October 2019, 669 regional brands have been registered as regional collective trademarks.
