Sixteenth Round of Negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement among Japan, China and the ROK to be Held

The sixteenth round of negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) among Japan, China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) will be held in Seoul, the ROK, from November 27 to 29, 2019.

This round of negotiations will bring together:

From the Japanese side, Mr. Kagawa Takehiro, Ambassador for International Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Tamura Akihiko, Deputy Director-General for Trade Policy and other officials, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and representatives from other related ministries and agencies;

From the Chinese side, Mr. Wang Shouwen, Vice Minister of Commerce and Deputy China International Trade Representative, Ministry of Commerce, and other negotiation officials;

From the ROK side, Mr. Yeo Han Koo, Deputy Minister for Trade Negotiations, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and other negotiation officials.

In this round of negotiations, market access and rules (in areas such as electronic commerce and intellectual property) will be comprehensively discussed.

[Reference] Background

  1. In response to the agreement reached at the Fifth Japan-China-ROK Trilateral Summit Meeting in May 2012, Japan, China and the ROK, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in November 2012, declared the start of rounds of Japan-China-ROK FTA negotiations, taking the opportunity of the ASEAN-related Summit Meetings.
  2. In March 2013, the first round of negotiations was held. Since then, the three countries held 15 rounds of negotiations as well as preparatory, intersessional and other meetings. Recently, they held the 15th round of negotiations in Tokyo in April 2019.
  3. Japan, China and the ROK reconfirmed that they will further enhance efforts to accelerate negotiations at the Seventh Japan-China-ROK Trilateral Summit Meeting in May 2018.
