On December 10 (Tue.), 2019, Mr. Kajiyama Hiroshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited India. In the country, he held a meeting with dignitaries of the Indian government and attended the 10th Japan-India Energy Dialogue.
1. Meeting with H.E. Mr. Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry
Minister Kajiyama held a meeting with Minister Goyal and the two sides exchanged views on cooperation on RCEP and enhancement of India’s industrial competitiveness. Concerning RCEP, Minister Kajiyama mentioned that Japan, together with India, will strive to address challenges to encourage India to participate in RCEP, and based on this, the two sides exchanged frank views. Moreover, Minister Kajiyama proposed the inauguration of the India-Japan Partnership for Industrial Competitiveness and to work together to overcome challenges faced by India through sharing Japan’s experience and conducting specific cooperation programs. Minister Goyal agreed to this proposal, stating that he wishes to do so in close collaboration with Minister Kajiyama.
2. Meeting with H.E. Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas as well as Minister of Steel
Minister Kajiyama held a meeting with Minister Pradhan and the two sides welcomed preparation work for the establishment of India-Japan Steel Dialogue and expected to hold the dialogue early next year. The ministers also exchanged views on cooperation in third countries in the field of LNG. Minister Kajiyama proposed cooperation in the field of steel; in particular, building capacity for high grade steel manufacturing, sharing of experiences and best practices for an increase of steel usage in constructio, and continuing ongoing energy efficiency cooperation. Minister Pradhan expressed strong support for this proposal.
3. Meeting with H.E. Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Nuclear Energy
Minister Kajiyama held a bilateral meeting with Minister Singh and the two sides confirmed that Japan and India will continue to hold discussions to promote Japan-India cooperation in the field of nuclear energy.
4. Japan-India Energy Dialogue
The 10th Japan-India Energy Dialogue was held, co-chaired by Minister Kajiyama and H.E. Mr. Raj Kumar Singh, Minister of State for Power, and New and Renewable Energy. Both Ministers confirmed the progress of the Japan-India Energy Transition Cooperation Plan, which was agreed on at previous dialogue, in the fields of electric power and renewable energy, energy efficiency, coal, oil and natural gas and hydrogen. Also, both Ministers agreed on the roadmap to integrate variable renewable energy and EVs into power systems, consisting of three pillars of technological, institutional and personnel cooperation. Minister Singh mentioned the importance of fossil fuels, appreciated the cooperation in energy of both countries and expressed intention to strengthen it.
5. Other outcomes
METI works with the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises of India to establish a new policy dialogue on automotive industry cooperation early next year.
The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) jointly inaugurated the Platform for Japan-India Business Cooperation in Asia-Africa Region.
