Two Standardization Project Themes Determined as New Standardization Projects to be Developed by Taking Advantage of the “Standardization System for Cultivating New Markets”

January 31, 2020

The Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC) determined two standardization project themes, which have been proposed by two businesses as below, as new standardization projects to be developed by taking advantage of the “Standardization System for Cultivating New Markets”. Future standardization activities involving these new projects are expected to contribute to creating new markets.

1. Outline

Standardization may work as a measure for effectively improving public trust in technologies and products, raising public awareness thereof and bringing about other advantages. Accordingly, deployment of strategic standardization activities has the potential for contributing to creating new markets for new technologies and other new business activities.

In light of this, under the “Public-Private Strategies for Standardization” formulated in May 2014, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), in July 2014, established the “Standardization System for Cultivating New Markets” under which, by omitting a conventional difficult step of reaching consensus in industrial associations, Japan is able to quickly develop domestic standards (JISs) or submit proposals for new international standards (to ISO/IEC) for outstanding technologies and products owned by companies or other businesses.

Against this backdrop, the JISC Standards Board for IEC Area examined whether or not the proposed two standardization project themes, shown on the next page, are feasible as new standardization projects to be developed by taking advantage of the system, and it decided to  advance specific discussions on the themes (as shown in the attachment) toward standardization.

2. Future schedule

The Japanese Standards Association (JSA) will establish a Committee for Preparing Draft Proposals, consisting of representatives of the proposers of the project themes and experts, and the committee will prepare draft proposals for standardization of the themes. Following the completion of the draft proposals, JISC will examine the proposals with a view to establishing new domestic standards (JISs) for the themes.
