Automobile Industry Council for Studying Countermeasures against the Novel Coronavirus to be Launched

As the epidemic of the novel coronavirus is expanding, automobile supply chains are expected to be influenced by some events resulting from the epidemic. From the viewpoint of preparing for potential expansion of such influences and making full efforts against the coronavirus, automobile manufacturers, automobile parts manufacturers and the government will collaborate to provide opportunities to quickly share information among stakeholders across the automobile industry and to hold discussions on necessary measures.

1. Purpose of launching the council

Amid the expansion of the epidemic, automobile supply chains are expected to be influenced by some events resulting from the epidemic, in particular, those with such characteristics as: [i] potential of such influences reaching many companies as this epidemic issue is not limited to specific areas; [ii] concerns over prolonged influences due to the difficulties in deciding when the epidemic will have ended; and [iii] need for government-level actions between Japan and China, e.g., information exchange with the stakeholders of Chinese authorities.

From the viewpoint of preparing for potential expansion of such influences and making full efforts against the coronavirus, automobile manufacturers, automobile parts manufacturers and the government will collaborate to provide opportunities to quickly share information among stakeholders across the automobile industry and to hold discussions on necessary measures.

2. Examples of the details to be discussed

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (Chairman: Mr. Toyoda Akio), the Japan Auto Parts Industries Association (Chairman: Mr. Okano Tadanori) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will jointly launch a Council of the Automobile Industry for Studying Countermeasures against the Novel Coronavirus. The council will tackle the following efforts for the time being. Details to be discussed will be added or amended according to the changes in the future situations.

  1. Information sharing and ascertaining the current situations
    The council will share such information as: common challenges across the industry (e.g., measures for preventing the novel coronavirus and those for smooth supply chains and distribution), measures for addressing such challenges, and policy measures offered by the government.

  2. Discussions on necessary measures
    The council will hold discussions on a variety of measures to be taken in the case of prolonged influences, e.g., measures for financing and a variety of policy-based support measures.
