On February 27, 2020, Mr. Kajiyama Hiroshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a meeting with Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Tokyo.
Minister Kajiyama held a meeting with IAEA Director General Grossi taking the opportunity of the Director General’s visit to Japan. Minister Kajiyama expressed his gratitude to Director General Grossi for the IAEA’s great support to Japan in advancing the measures for decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and those for addressing contaminated water from the station, e.g., through dispatching IAEA review missions and making other efforts. He also requested that the IAEA continue to cooperate with Japan.
Director General Grossi praised the Japanese government’s efforts to advance the measures for the decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and addressing the contaminated water issue. He also stated that the IAEA has been reviewing the report prepared by Japan’s Subcommittee on Handling of the ALPS Treated Water (“ALPS Subcommittee”) and that the IAEA will continue to support Japan.
The two sides confirmed that Japan and the IAEA will continue to cooperate in order to promote efficient and safe use of nuclear power generation all over the world.
