Examples of Design-Driven Management in Leading Companies Compiled

March 23, 2020

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) compiled the “Handbook on Design-Driven Management, a compilation aimed at business persons to raise their awareness of design-driven management, and the “Collection of Challenges in and Solutions for 'Design-Driven Management’,” another compilation explaining case examples of leading companies engaging in such management.

1. Background

Design-Driven Management is a management approach whereby an organization leverages the potential of designs to establish their brands and create innovations.

On May 23, 2018, the JPO compiled “Declarations of ‘Design-Driven Management’” and, since then, it has been promoting such management.

As part of this initiative, the JPO compiled the “Handbook on Design-Driven Management” and the “Collection of Challenges in and Solutions for Design-Driven Management” as compilations for providing answers to questions from business persons intending to take on design-driven management as well as providing references for putting such management into practice.

2. Outline of the handbook

The handbook aims to encourage business persons to make use of design-driven management in their business situations and, to this end, it specifically explains: approaches to design thinking, e.g., basic ideas of design thinking, the significance and value that design thinking has and reasons for the importance of design thinking in the present era; and eight challenges that companies may face in introducing design-driven management into business.

3. Outline of the collection

The collection focuses on eight challenges that companies may face in introducing design-driven management into business, which are included in the handbook as well, and explains ingenious approaches that leading companies have taken in overcoming these eight challenges in advancing their design-driven management.
