Materials Concerning Approaches to Enhancing Proper Mold Management Released
May 26, 2020
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) was scheduled to hold a Symposium for Approaches to Enhancing Proper Mold Management as its effort for promoting “enhancement of proper mold management” aiming at correction of a business practice in which prime contractors force their subcontractors to bear costs for management of molds, which are tools necessary for manufacturing parts, in an inappropriate manner. However, METI canceled convening of the symposium from the viewpoint of preventing expansion of the novel coronavirus disease. Instead, METI hereby releases materials, on which speakers were scheduled to talk, and a manual on approaches to enhancing proper mold management, which METI was scheduled to distribute at the symposium.
1. Purpose
METI has been advancing an effort for “enhancement of proper mold management” aiming at correction of a business practice in which prime contractors force their subcontractors to bear costs for management of molds, which are tools necessary for manufacturing parts, in an inappropriate manner, by placing the effort as a priority action for enhancing proper trade practices.
In 2019, METI inaugurated a Council for Promoting Enhancement of Proper Mold Management, bringing together both representatives of the prime contractors and those of the subcontractors, and the council compiled basic approaches to mold trade practices, including criteria for disposal and returning of unnecessary molds and those for stipulating rules for payment of mold storage costs.
METI was scheduled to hold the symposium in March 2020 for the purpose of explaining these new rules and the case examples of pioneering efforts in the machine parts and tooling industries and to further encourage related industrial players to enhance proper mold management. However, it canceled the symposium from the viewpoint of preventing expansion of the novel coronavirus disease.
Instead, METI hereby releases materials on which speakers were scheduled to talk and a manual on approaches to enhancing proper mold management, which METI was scheduled to distribute at the symposium.
