Results Compiled for the Electricity Supply and Demand for the Winter of FY2019 as well as Outlook and Measures for Electricity Supply and Demand for the Summer of FY2020
May 27, 2020
The Electricity and Gas Basic Policy Subcommittee under the Electricity and Gas Industry Committee of the Advisory Committee for Natural Resources and Energy (hereinafter referred to as the “subcommittee”) held a meeting and compiled data on the results of the electricity supply and demand for the winter of FY2019 as well as data on the outlook and measures for electricity supply and demand for the summer of FY2020 into a report.
As for the electricity supply and demand for the summer of FY2020, a reserve margin of 3%, which is the minimum ratio required for stable supply of electricity across Japan, is expected to be secured. However, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) requests public cooperation in energy-saving efforts and energy conservation at a reasonable pace as usual in past years.
1. Background and purpose
Aiming to provide full-fledged electricity supply-demand measures to address Japan’s circumstances surrounding electricity after the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan has been studying supply and demand of electricity in summer and winter, the seasons when electricity demand increases across Japan.
The subcommittee held the 24th meeting and compiled data on the results of the electricity supply and demand for the winter of FY2019 as well as data on the outlook and measures for electricity supply and demand for the summer of FY2020 into a report.
2. Key points of the results of the electricity supply and demand for the winter of FY2019
- Backed by the warmer winter across Japan, the results of the maximum electricity demand fell below the estimated demand amount for the severe winter in all service areas.
- Concerning the results of the electricity supply and demand for the winter of FY2019 in all service areas, the reserve margin of 3%, the minimum ratio required for stable supply of electricity across Japan, was secured.
3. Key points of the outlook and measures for electricity supply and demand for the summer of FY2020
- Concerning the outlook and measures for electricity supply and demand for the summer of FY2020, the reserve margin of 3%, the minimum ratio required for stable supply of electricity across Japan, is expected to be secured.
- Based on this expectation, the subcommittee decided to not request public cooperation in energy conservation with numerical goal this summer. However, METI still requests that the public cooperate in energy-saving efforts and energy conservation at a reasonable pace as in past years.
